Southern Ice Hockey... When the news first broke that Atlanta got an NHL team I thought it was a joke. When Florida got one too, I realized truth was stranger than the joke.

Florida has an NHL franchise for the same reason why the Miami Dolphins are in the AFC East instead of the South.

Well, Atlanta has a team in the same minor league as the SC Stingrays.

About 15 years ago, I had a work colleague who is originally from Elizabeth City, NC who was (I imagine still is) a big Hurricanes fan. She mentioned journeying to Raleigh to see the Stanley Cup in person when they won it 20 years ago..

I recall reading several years ago that the only school in the southeast to sponsor an NCAA Division I varsity ice hockey team was Alabama-Huntsville. Not sure whether or not that's still true.

And again, when I was at the Atlanta baseball regional final game two weeks ago, the Oklahoma pitching coach mentioned to me that, like USC, there is but club-level Sooner ice hockey.

Though I didn’t watch much this year I always enjoy playoff hockey. The games are fast and intense and it seems the top teams have a 2-3 yr run then somebody else steps up unlike baseball.

Where I grew up no one said “Who won the hockey game last night?” - with that being said , I have a great respect for the sport and skill involved - just have no emotive tie to it.

Tampa Bay Lightning fan. My daughter lives down that way and took me to a game a few years back. I never had been a fan but that`s all it took. I highly recommend you go to a game in person. I watch more NHL than I do the other pro sports, which is still not a lot. She can tell you anything you want to know about the Lightning!

I've only been to one hockey game myself. It was in the early 1970s at the Savannah Civic Center. The West Palm Beach Bruins vs the Southern League All-Stars, or some such.

Hockey fan here. Been one since the SC Stingrays' first year here in SC. Since then I'll typically pull for the franchise they are from. Currently the Caps. In fact the Caps' coach got his first coaching gig with the Stingrays. Tough year for them. Not too far removed from the Stanley Cup though. That was fun.

I'm not a big hockey fan but it beats the living crap out of that other stupid sport they play on a "pitch" and use phrases like "one nil".

Go Canes, Wasnt a Hockey fan, other than the USA Olympic team, i would only go to a couple "Checkers" games a year. But a few years back i was able to attend many of the Nashville Predators' games., WOW, what an event that is... Love it now..
