Wasn't hydraulics the issue back in 1989 (?) with the Sioux City crash?
That's a fascinating story. There was a flight training pilot on board who had done simulations of similar failures and had experience trying to maneuver using only throttles. It was incredible that they got to any airport and that anyone survived.
