I don't follow or stay on top of contracts, status, etc of each player. Can the Mets deal him away this season, and if they can do so, should they?
Peralta is a free agent next year. They can deal him mid-season, as he does not have a no-trade clause. Should they? Ask me again in six weeks, and we'll see where the Mets stand then. If the Mets do decide to trade him, there will be significant interest. He will bring back a quality prospect or two, but probably not Top 100, I don't think. His current contract is very team friendly, so he would be a cheap rental for somebody.

Of course he is the manager and not going to throw him under the bus, but post game, Mendoza was very positive on him.

As part of my Mets 60 year retrospective, we now go back 40 years to 1986. Since everyone in this thread knows about 1986, I will do something different. Let’s find out how well you know the 1986 Mets. 10 trivia questions. Call them out if you know them. No cheating!
  1. Who was the 1986 Mets opening day leftfielder?
  2. Name the Met rookie utility player who got a key hit in the WS Game 6 10th inning rally, and then was traded after the season. He went on to win the MVP a few years later. EXTRA CREDIT: State the reason why he reportedly was traded.
  3. What Met pitcher led the team in wins and ERA?
  4. This pitcher, a veteran of the bad days of the early 80’s, was injured in his only appearance in 1986. He was traded at midseason and retired after the following season. He then went to law school and became a baseball executive. Name him.
  5. On July 22, 1986, the Mets and Reds engaged in a brawl in which three Met players were ejected. They ran out of players and had to alternate Roger McDowell and Jesse Orosco between pitching and playing outfield. What Met player threw the first punch?
  6. Jerry Izenberg, a longtime friend of Rutgers, wrote a book “Greatest Game Ever Played” about a specific 1986 Mets game. Which game was it? (Hint: It was NOT the aforementioned July 22 game.)
  7. What was the name of the Houston nightclub at which four Mets got into a bar fight and spent the night in jail?
  8. Name the former Mets high-level pitching prospect who was the losing pitcher for the Red Sox in World Series games six and seven.
  9. This Mets fifth starter was the winning pitcher in WS game six. He was subsequently traded, became a closer, made three All-Star teams, and got a second ring. Name him.
  10. The Mets used four catchers in 1986. I’ll give you one - Gary Carter. You give me the other three.
Answers tomorrow!
You got most of the answers to my 1986 Met trivia quiz. Answers are all here, with commentary.
  1. George Foster was the opening day LF. He was the Mets first big free agent signing, having signed a five year contract in 1982. He did OK, but didn’t live up to expectations. In 1986, at age 37, he was pretty much done and was released at midseason. He was not a good personality fit for the 1986 Mets. He was a quiet, introverted straight arrow. Drugs? Foster didn’t even use caffeine!
  2. Willis nailed this one. Kevin Mitchell was a promising Met rookie in 1986, but was unloaded by Frank Cashen because he thought Mitchell, who had a bit of a gangsta rep, would be a bad influence on Gooden and Strawberry. Ironic that Cashen thought a rookie would influence veterans, rather than vice versa. To this day Mitchell insists he has never used drugs.
  3. Bob Ojeda was the team’s statistical ace that year. 18-5 with a 2.57 ERA. Gooden was good that year, but at age 21 he would never again be the Dr. K of 1985. Sad.
  4. Ed Lynch was the pitcher who only appeared in one game in 1986, then became a lawyer and a baseball executive. Given that he paid his Met dues in the early 80’s, it’s a shame he could not have played a bigger role in 86.
  5. Ray Knight instigated the brawl. On a team of crazies, he may have been the craziest - not in terms of lifestyle, but of temperament. He and Eric Davis looked like they were ready to go. The ump steps in and pulls Davis away. Knight takes advantage of the situation and slugs the helpless Davis. How long a suspension would that have earned today? Knight got off with a $500 fine. My, how the game has changed. One other note about that incident. George Foster did not join the bench clearing brawl. He stayed in the dugout. This did not sit well with Davey Johnson, and is said to be one reason for Foster’s release.
  6. Izenberg’s Greatest Game Ever Played was the NLCS Game 6, in which the Mets and Astros went 16 innings before the Mets won to clinch the series. Then in true 1986 Mets fashion, they vandalized the charter plane home.
  7. Willis correctly said it sounds like Hooters. It was Cooters. The four Met players involved were Teufel, Aguilera, Darling, and Ojeda. They were celebrating the birth of Teufel’s son. Upon leaving, they got into a scuffle with a couple of security guards who, unfortunately for the four Mets, were off-duty policemen. That earned them overnight accommodations at a Houston detention facility.
  8. Calvin Schiraldi was a top Mets prospect in 1985 whom the Mets traded (among others) to acquire Ojeda. He was a key reliever for Boston down the stretch in 1986, but the Mets got to him when it mattered most. It was pretty much downhill for Schiraldi after that. He was out of baseball by age 29, and for years battled substance abuse and depression. He later wrote a book about his experiences, which unlike most sports books, he actually wrote by himself.
  9. Rick Aguilera was the Mets fifth starter who was the winning pitcher in Game 6, and later became an all-star closer with the Twins.
  10. The Mets three backup catchers that year were:
    1. Ed Hearn, the primary backup who was later traded for David Cone - what a steal!
    2. Barry Lyons, who only appeared in six games, but got a lot more play in the next few years.
    3. John Gibbons, who is primarily known for his lengthy tenure as Blue Jays manager, and spent 2024-25 in support of Carlos Mendoza as bench coach.
Next up, the bicentennial year of 1976, aka the year of Kingman!

Bravo. I didn't think anyone would remember Ed Lynch!
It’s funny- with almost all of these- the player would jump into my head but the names were escaping. With Lynch- my first reaction was “Cubs” but couldn’t remember the name. Mitchell was the only no brainer for the MVP. The first punch of the fight when I saw that was “Didn’t Ray Knight start every fight”

Sucks to be an optionable reliever at the back end of the pen. Jonathan Pintaro comes up for one day, pitches three innings, saves the pen. His reward? Sayonara. Daniel Duarte back up. He will likely meet the same fate.Just a question of when.

How'd the Spurs do?
Angry Ufc GIF

And people complained about Pikiell when he had Dylan Harper, who was very young, still developing, and injured or sick a good chunk of the season. The Spurs head coach should be ashamed of himself.

ESPN Just Loves The Mets Off Season Moves!

The New York Mets are really cooked

Did David Stearns and Steve Cohen have the worst offseason in MLB history?

• They didn't want to pay Pete Alonso and now have worse offense and defense at first base.

• They gave up prospects to acquire Freddy Peralta, who is a mediocre 4-5 with a 4.04 ERA.

• They acquired injury-prone Luis Robert Jr., who hadn't hit well in three years, to play center field. With the Mets, he's ... injured and hasn't hit well.

• They signed Jorge Polanco, another injury-prone player. He has played 14 games.

• They made Bo Bichette the fourth-highest-paid player of 2026. He's hitting .227 with a .277 OBP.

• They signed Devin Williams, who replaced Edwin Diaz as the closer. He has a 5.57 ERA.

• They traded Brandon Nimmo for Marcus Semien, since Semien had fewer years left on his contract. Fine. Except Semien is hitting .220 with negative WAR, while Nimmo has been playing well for Texas.

That's seven significant moves in one offseason. It's not that some of them haven't worked out. It's not just that all of them haven't worked out. It's that all of them haven't worked out in a completely disastrous fashion (OK, Peralta hasn't been a complete disaster).

As trade season starts up, here are the big names who could move -- and the teams that could deal for them. Jeff Passan »

Frankly, it's a miracle the Mets are even 29-38.

Verdict: Absolutely real

I was at the game against the Somerset Patriots with my son's club baseball team.

He looked great.
HR was to the 2nd batter of the game. Then gave up nothing.
That's a great venue. Our office gets a hospitality suite there every summer for an outing. They do a nice job.

Harper should be playing over Fox...BTW- I forget what player had said it- but heard someone say that Dylan may be the strongest guard they have ever seen coming in as a rookie.

We all know how the season has gone but some of this is just Passan being an *ss. Since he decided the Mets are in must sell mode everything needs to fit that narrative.

Nobody predicted the season Bichette has had. Take all the shots you want at Bichette underperforming but to criticize the move is just dumb.

To actually write that Nimmo is playing well is him just throwing gas on the fire. How is Nimmo playing well when Semien has more HR, more RBI and less strikeouts than him and we all agree Semien is struggling? Add in that Nimmo is rolling with a.330 on base and his “playing well” comment turns out to be exposed as not true. I loved what Nimmo did here but it was the right business decision and it cleared RF for Benge.

F**k Jeff Passan. This season sucks enough. Don’t need to hear BS from him or any outsiders. We Mets fans would rather wallow in our own misery.

McLean is just awful and annoying to watch pitch . He looked like Nolan Ryan and Pedro combined in the first inning . He threw a pitch you couldn’t do with a wiffle ball .

He just flat out sucks in the second inning
His *** will be a closer in 3 years

Many don't like Apple TV, but the game is very enjoyable with the Mets radio broadcast perfectly simulcast through AppleTV. This is a great feature.
The Apple TV broadcast has by far the best picture. I have the service so I don't mind when it's on there.

This is a World Cup night though so only following through MLB game cast on laptop.
