Boone County, Nebraska




- Population: ~5,300 (2025)
- Albion is the county seat and largest city in the county.
- Established in 1871 and named after famous frontiersman Daniel Boone.
- First settled in the late 1860’s, encouraged by the railroad expansions and the Homestead Act of 1862.
- 687 square miles
- License Plate Prefix #23
- Wheat, corn, and oats were the dominant crops in the county that fueled the local economy.
- The first birth in the county was a child named Clara Boone Mattison in 1873.
- The first death in the county also came in 1873, but sadly was a child who belonged to Elias Atwood Sr.
- Albion got its name by way of contest in a game of Euchre (a card game). 2 men played for Albion, 2 men played for Manchester. Winner named the town.
- The prosperity and growth of Albion is attributed to Loran Clark Sr.
- Boone County Fair is held every July.

- Logan Fontenelle – Omaha “chief” killed in 1855 in a skirmish with Brule and Arapaho is buried in Petersburg, NE. Was a trader of Omaha and French ancestry who was an interpreter to the US Indian Agency in Bellevue. Grandson of Big Elk, a principal chief of the Omaha tribe. The Omaha tribe did not recognize Fontenelle as a member of the tribe due to his European father, but the Americans considered him a chief since he was the only one in the tribe who could speak fluent English.

- Went to St. Edward HS where he was an All-State halfback in 1942 in 6-man football.
- About 5’9” 165lbs.
- Wore #14 and played QB for Nebraska 1945-1948 where he was 2nd Team All-Big Seven in 1948.
- Drafted by the New York Giants in the 23rd round of the 1949 NFL Draft.
- Offensive Line coach at Univeristy of Nebraska from 1960-1985
- Coached the Offensive Line for 2 national championship teams (1970, 1971).
- Member of the Nebraska High School Hall of Fame.
- Fischer Native Son Award is given every year in his honor to the senior player selected by the Husker coaches, who best exemplifies the following qualities: good work ethic, competitiveness, leadership, forthrightness, sense of humor, pride, loyalty, and love of Nebraska.
