I like to tell this story around this time of year. I usually post it on the basketball board, but thought I'd put it. My apologies if some of you have heard it before, but I think it's a great story that really highlights how genuine of a person he is. I can't remember the exact year, but it was during our run to the world series in that 2006 timeframe.

My buddy's roommate and a group of friends started going to Omaha every year around that time. I didn't know him all that well, but he's Canadian and into hockey and not basketball, which will become evident here shortly. They were able to pick up a couple tickets while down there that were much better than where their current seats were. So the roommate and his hockey buddy went down to the new seats.

They were sitting there and an older gentleman, Roy, sat down next to him and the roommate said he was super nice. They got to visiting and he asked the guy what he does and the reply was something like, " oh, I just coach a little basketball". Now this roommate is super nice and gets excited very easily so he was I'm sure jacked up when he replied, "I coach too!". Roy asked him what he coaches which was like middle school football or something along those lines. They talked about where they were from and how he was going to school in North Dakota and played a little football. Roy was asking a bunch of questions and truly interested.

Pretty soon between games or something, people started coming up asking for pictures with Roy. So the roommate starts realizing it must be someone kind of famous and finally got the nerve to ask where Roy coaches in which he replied North Carolina. The roommate freaks out and replies, "You are Dean Smith!". I guess everyone started laughing including Roy who explained who he was then.

When he was telling me the story he said it seemed like Roy really enjoyed the conversations probably because the guy had no idea who he was. I didn't know him really at the time this happened, but when he found out I was a Carolina fan, he couldn't wait to tell me. Maybe someone will get something similar this coming week as I'm sure Roy will be there.
