Which returning player will be most improved in 2026-2027?

With returning players, there is always the hope that they will greatly improve the following season and for Rutgers, that could happen for any of its 5 returning players.

With Rutgers, a strong case could be made that Gevonte Ware will be the most improved next year. Ware is the only returning player to not start a game and played only in 6 games for a total of 36 minutes going 1 for 4 from the field and 0 of 2 from the line with 3 rebounds, 2 turnovers, 0 blocks and 8 fouls. Ware played less and was less effective than Baye Fall who played in 9 games for a total of 45 minutes going 2 of 6 from the field, 1 of 2 from the line, with 15 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 turnovers, 1 steal and 3 blocks.

Obviously, Ware has a lot of room for improvement because to be honest what I saw didn’t look good. Ware looked slow and not particularly athletic. Ware also is going for a redshirt because of injury.

Ware’s performance or lack thereof did not match what was said about him when he was recruited. In a podcast back in September of 2024, Mike and Ritchie had a lot of good things to say about him and noted that although he wasn’t a top 150 player, he was a solid 3 star. They described him as a good rebounder, athletic and bouncy who could shoot from the outside and even hit some 3s. Ware showed none of that last season.

As poorly as he performed, Pikiel wanted him back. Ritchie has suggested that it was because he was dirt cheap in the age of NIL. However, even if he was dirt cheap, Pikiel would have to have seen something if he wanted him to return.

There are several reasons to be optimistic about Ware this coming season. Whatever injury Ware had doesn’t appear to be one he can’t recover from. High school bigs often have difficulty getting used to playing against players who are bigger, stronger and faster than the players they faced in high school and need an adjustment period. There will be times when other teams have a power forward that they need someone with Ware’s size and strength to match up against. If Ware defies expectations and becomes a solid rotational player, it will be hard to not consider him for most improved.

I saw Ware in action during preseason last year and was impressed with his body size. He appears to be a basketball player, not an athlete. At the very least, I think he will give us 5-to-10 minutes per game. I'm eager to see what he'll provide for us as the season progresses. Many don't see him getting off the bench. Not me. I have a feeling we are all going to be pleasantly surprised.

I think Buchanan, Francis, Davis, and Ware are what they are. Mark and Powers seem like the 2 guys that can really take their games to another level. I'll give the edge to Powers.

Unless you are a regular visitor to practice, I don’t know how anyone can have an opinion about Ware, good or bad.
This. And Pike keeping him around means nothing without knowing the money details. Even Baye Fall found a home for a 4th time.

Powers may have more of an uphill battle for playing time. Although some other players could play point guard, Mark is primarily competing against Davis who he should beat out if we look at how they both did at the end of last season. Powers plays at either the 2 or 3 and will likely need to compete for playing time with Francis, Smith, Jones, and possibly Duarte and Sydnor. Powers has shown he can get open shots on his own and it is a nice looking shot, but he missed to often last season to be an efficient scorer. If he slumps he could get buried behind all the new transfers.

He’s not going to play much unless he defense improves drastically. Everyone except Smith competing with him for time is going to be better that he was on that end last year except Smith.

Of course Ware has the most room to improve, but Buchanan is the one who has the table set for him. If someone works with him on boxing out/ sealing in rebounding, his contribution could be significant. He could also play the hockey enforcer role, which is coming back. The ways he needs to improve can be achieved thru hard work, repetition, and in-game focus. That's doable. I hope he does it.

Lino will have the most opportunities to show improvement, imo. He’ll get the PT, and he’ll be our primary PG on day one. If he picks up where he left off with shooting treys and finishing at the rim, he’ll contribute more immediately in the OOC vs last year.

Lino’s biggest improvement though, will have to be as a distributor. With the weapons we have now, his assist numbers will hopefully go way up. If not, then I won’t consider him the most improved.

If not him then I’d lean toward Powers. I wish I knew what his work ethic was like, because if he puts in the time to develop his game in all facets, I could see him really opening some eyes next season.

Gurdak (could double his offensive output), Davis (why not? has made a jump every year), Mark, Powers (the most upside on the team.)

I like having Davis on the team, but of all our players, his year over year ceiling for anticipated “improvement” has to be the lowest. He’s a veteran senior who has already played 3 full seasons and trained for 3 full offseasons in Pike’s system.

For me, one of the most exciting things about our new roster is that everyone else on the team is either brand new to RU, or just completed their first season in our program. Usually these are the times when potential for growth is highest (after playing in a system and then working on improving at things within it in that first offseason). Dylan Grant is the only returning player I recall in Pike’s history whose defense did not improve noticably year over year after playing in our program.

Put me down for powers...he could even develop into a pg if his handle progresses. I like his playmaking ability and the decisions he makes running pick and roll..

It will definitely be Lino Mark. See above.

Gurdak is interesting especially if Lino starts and pushes pace. Like the upside.

David no shouldn’t play more than 8 min a game matchup specific.

Powers and Mark both had moments. Both have promise and it will depend on off season work ethic. I like Powers
