We beat 13-3 in the midweek against their midweek arms. They have a starter who is very capable. It’s not February. VCU is probably the best 4 seed in the tournament, we’re not going to take a huge chance like your alluding to, to make the odds worse for us to lose that game. It happens every year, look at Ole Miss last year..
If a 23 loss VCU team that is 10-14 on the road scares us so bad that we have to burn our ace then we got bigger problems. With their ace on the mound or not. We should handle them easily regardless. And if we don't then we don't deserve to be there.

You can also make the argument that both ECU and Tenn’s coaches think who they’re starting Friday is a better matchup Friday than against us. Blanco gives up HRs and ECU doesn’t hit them. Norby is on short rest and they have used him in long relief as needed. None of this stuff is happening in a vacuum.
You got to look at matchups for the whole regional not just Friday and Saturday. With us having 4 guys we trust you got to micromanage the pitching somewhere in the regional. Game 3 and 4 is not when you want to have to micromanage. VCU is 10-14 away from home and lost 23 games this year. If we can't beat them without throwing our ace then we are in trouble

I just think burning DeCaro in Game 1 is going to set us up for some problems later in the regional. We run ruled VCU with Rose and Flannery earlier in the season. I just don't get burning your ace when we should handle them easily with secondary arms. The 2 and 3 seed are not throwing their ace due to them playing us in Game 2. I think best case would be if DeCaro starts and we get up by 6 or more runs early you pull him. We will have to be strategic on getting some innings from people other than DeCaro, Lynch, Glauber and McDuffie. Friday should be that perfect opportunity.
Do you think VCU used their best arms in that midweek game?

I can agree with several strategies on this topic, but if we are in the same shape as we were in Sunday, I don't like our chances.
There's going to be two big differences if we start 2-0 and are in the same pitching situation as Sunday.

a) we'll be facing the opponent's #4 or some combination of depth bullpen arms
b) we won't be facing the best offense in the country

Everything needs to go into starting out 2-0. Because in game 3, it’s game 4 for your opponent so you have a default pitching advantage. If you can line it up to have Decaro handle Friday and then have Lynch and a fresh McDuffie and Glauber Saturday you are fine.

I am assuming not, but we didn't either. Why would we be scared of VCU's #1?
It's not about being scared, it's recognizing they're a capable baseball team.

3 of 16 four seeds won the opener last year. that's not insignificant. And two other 4-seeds beat the 1-seed in at least one game later in the weekend.

VCU held UVa to 5, 7, and 5 runs in a 3-game weekend series. Treating the game like we're going to score 12 runs is leap I'm not comfortable making.

We also haven’t been lighting it up in these Regional game 1s under Forbes, and the last 2 years haven’t played someone as good as VCU

I'm afraid that the basketball fans have showed up to explain "how to do it" to the Carolina Baseball fans. Usually, that does not occur until we reach Omaha.

I have flown on many a plane with Carolina fans whose fascination with baseball emerged only in late May or early June. That unpleasant lesson was first learned between 2006 and 2009. In the first year out there, our tickets were in the same section as the team's family members, as they had been in Tuscaloosa. In 2007, our tickets at Rosenblatt were one section away. However, by 2009, our seats had been "Big-Rammed" all the way to the edge of the zoo.

Although our sight lines changed over the years, that inconvenience was more than offset by the keen analysis shared by an influx of Tar Heel tyros trying to grasp abstruse concepts, such as innings, who were, nevertheless, more than willing to share their "hot takes" on college baseball--both before and after the games.

It was preferable--especially, if you were hungry--to hang out with LSU fans at "The Drover." Unfortunately, because of rain, it was too late to do so in 2008 after FedEx unloaded his Grand Slam on the Tigers. THAT was a night to remember.
