I remember Bard having a hard time fielding Oregon State bunts and throwing one down the right field line that was very costly. That is not how I remember Bards entire career . Bard and Miller was the best one, two in UNC history.

I always felt bad for Steed. Yes the throw was wide. However, I felt like FedEx (I think it was him) was a little late getting to the bag and wasn’t in a great position to receive the throw.
As a former 1Bman (who excelled in the field but struggled to hit curves which is why I never had ANY chance to play beyond HS), you can see the jumbled footwork from FedEx as he tried to adjust to the throw. I’m convinced that Flack would have easily made that adjustment and catch. Sigh.

Fronk was killing us defensively at 3rd from what i remember but we could not take his bat out of the lineup. After the game 2 loss, imo we overcompensated and moved Fronk to DH, Fedex at 1b, Flack to 3rd and Benji caught instead of DHing. Errors were always that teams (only) weakness and it caught them/us At the exact wrong time

IIRC, there was a pinch hit or pinch run change that caused a late-game defensive change that moved FedEx to 1B. But it was 20 years ago so who knows?!

I was at the beach that year with my entire extended family probably 30-40 people deep. I remember being huddled around the tv watching that unfold. Painful specific memory but good times. Very nostalgic.

The throw was wide (up the 1B line) because FedEx, unfamiliar with the position, stepped off early with his left foot toward 2B and could not adjust when Steed's throw went "wide right." Had he waited, and stepped toward RF after seeing the direction of the throw, it should have been a catchable backhand.

No question about it.

I don’t remember much about the game other than the throw. I went back and watched some highlights today on YouTube. What was up with stealing home with two strikes and the batter swinging on a pitch two feet out of the zone. Was that a missed sign? Then Horton getting thrown out at the plate then runner gets doubled off second. Brutal baserunning that game.
