SEC always had tough schedules including when they were winning titles. What is harder now is that the 2s and 3s in SEC can go somewhere else and get paid while also starting. SEC players get targeted the same way coaches were. Saban could never keep a coaching staff intact because so many teams wanted to hire Saban coaches. NIL killed SEC and that's one reason among others that Saban left.
Good example of problem is WR Shazz Preston. He was a 4 star and #5 WR in nation. He signed with Bama and after 3 seasons had 6 targets. He went to Tulane and became their top WR with 43 receptions for 723 yards and four TDs. Now he's going to Indiana. Bama was a dead end for him.

The best thing the SEC ever did was convince everyone that they play tough schedules. Out of conference it’s typically one good team and three absolute laughers. In conference they get inflated “ranked” matchups versus teams that have no business being ranked and end the season 7-6. 2018 Alabama is a great example

The subtext is that it's not fair that everyone can legally pay players now and that liberalized transfer rules prevent the stockpiling of talent and distribute it more equally.

Everybody plays the filler games but SEC was a tough conference. From Florida's NC in 2006 to Georgia's NC in 2022 the SEC won the NC 13 times in 16 years. I think LSU, Georgia and Alabama were tougher than Ohio St, Michigan, PSU. BIG had 1 title in that time (Ohio St 2014) and Michigan sucked for a ling time and PSU iffy . As bad as RU vs Ohio St games can be, RU playing those SEC teams would have been torture. Those Georgia teams were scary.
Amazing how much things changed once all the teams were legally allowed to pay the players, not just the SEC paying players under the table.
I think it's more of this ^^^.
It's not a coincidence that everyone suddenly caught up and surpassed the SEC once NIL was implemented. They could hoard talent and keep second teamers. Now on a more money even playing field, those second teamers bolt and talent is more spread out across conferences for the top few.

They’ve definitely had all time great teams at the top, it’s always the middle and bottom that are overrated in my opinion. That and playing 4 ooc games, one well into November is what I think is weak.

So- was this an old ***** fest from Kiffin or was he talking about the current conferences? Last time I looked, B1G has won the last 3 championships and that has been by 3 different teams. SEC- they had their run and it was dominated by 2 teams.
So- he can stop his little *****-fest. Those SEC guys are just pissed that their ole car dealer friends are no longer out spending everyone else.
And it’s likely to get worse. Outside of a couple of SEC teams, BIG school’s alums have a lot more money.
This is the one thing that the SEC does right that I wish the BIG did more of. The BIG needs to get out there and brag and say how much better we are then everyone else. The SEC is always saying how they are the best, the toughest whatever it takes to make them sound good. The BIG needs to start telling people, hey look at the 12 team playoff games since it started. I think the SEC has won like 1 or 2 games in 3 years against P4 schools.
An advantage that SEC has is that the "SEC region" produces a lot of the best recruits and has often has stronger college fan base than NFL teams in area. Whole football programs have improved just switching focus to southeastern recruits.
NJ has great recruit base and strong HS football culture (2009-11 Bosco won or tied for national champions ) but institutionally/culturally Rutgers doesn't match SEC football vibe (or even elite B1G vibe). Sometimes I think RU football should promote itself more in line with the state's overall football culture. Like instead of vibing that Rutgers is "the birthplace" of college ball (which few care about outside the program) focusing instead that "Jersey is Football." That would resonate with much larger crowd and RU would automatically have its boat lifted in that tide.

If the basis of college atheltics is "our group is better than everyone else" then there will never be a level playing field.
Why would the B1G/SEC revenue share or agree to rules that may "bring up" the lower level teams?
It's this tribal mindset that ultimately creates the imbalance in the sport.
But sometimes the narrative becomes the "facts" regardless of what the outcomes really are. Sometimes the highroad isn't the best road.
Agreed. Rutgers needs to do a better job of promoting themselves. It's hard to do it in the NY/Phili area as both are very much pro sports towns. I've always kidded with my friends saying Rutgers could win the Title in football or basketball and I'm not sure the NY papers and TV news would even cover it.
