Nothing but nerd trading card stores, Asian massage parlors, a dance studio, cheap generic shoe store and a t shirt printing company. Oh can’t forget the failing ethnic food court restaurant.

What a massive fall from grace.

A higher-end mall in North Texas is trying to stay relevant as a place for people to go to shop, dine, etc. They were being overrun by youths who were going there to get in fights, cause trouble, etc. So they added a Saturday curfew:

Saturdays, 3pm - Close

  1. Visitors 17 years of age and younger are required to be accompanied at all times by a parent or supervising adult age 21 or older on Saturday after 3 pm. Parental Guidance Required hours are subject to change during the holiday season.
  2. Unsupervised youth shopping prior to 3 pm on Saturday evenings must leave the mall by 3 pm or immediately be joined by a parent or supervising adult age 21 or older.
  3. Proof of age may be required for the youth or supervising adult. Those who lack proper identification may be asked to leave the property.
  4. Valid identification includes a state issued driver’s license or ID card, a military ID, a school ID card, or a passport. The identification must be tamper proof and include a photograph and date of birth.
  5. One adult may accompany up to four youths.* All accompanied youths must remain with the supervising adult.
  6. Supervising adults are responsible for the actions of the youth they accompany.

Ours is still running but a big chunk is now part of the hospital across the street. It's in a prime location so it's future is likelier to be a business complex than an abandoned derelict.

Million person metro here and there are maybe 4 actual malls, but only 2 that people go to. 1 people often forget about, and 1 that is on its last dying breath.

Bezos screwed us all.
I don't think so. I think the whole experience of going out shopping just got so unpleasant the people were begging for a way to avoid it.

Think about how bad holiday mall traffic was at its very worst. Driving around, doing laps, trying to find a parking spot. People fighting over who's spot it is, etc. Then how crowded everything was when you finally got inside, and how rude people had become when in the stores. Now add Black Friday shopping to that, and people lining up overnight to get in, then getting into legit fights over cabbage patch doll or a discounted TV. Now throw in the kids who go there and get in fights and flash mobs and generally detract from the experience.

The second we no longer had to tolerate that, a LOT of people were glad to be done with it.

I won't even go to Target or Wal-Mart anymore unless it's absolutely unavoidable - that whole experience is annoying now.

I went to Academy Sports yesterday to buy some ammo to go shooting tomorrow. They only had one register open, and the guy checking out was arguing about them not price-matching Best Buy for something using a receipt that he had in his pocket. The guy's complaining that "It's almost two dollars difference!". I wanted to punch that guy in his throat.

We had a massive shopping / dining destination added at a major I75 interchange. Now, a big mall in the southern part of the county is being redeveloped into a mixed use, commercial and residential, location. More restaruants, Whole Foods, Trader Joes, etc.

Malls weren't designed for efficient shopping, they were designed to provide a day long shopping entertainment experience,... Nobody does that anymore.

We've got three thriving malls in Middle TN. The rest are closed and have/are being redeveloped.

Our high end malls are thriving, but most of the low end and midrange malls have been shuttered or redeveloped for different purposes. UCLA is currently renovating the big mall in West Los Angeles into a research park.

When the no pics wife and I went out to Colorado a few years ago, we stopped at the Colorado Mills mall and it was quite nostalgic. Not very many vacant spots, and pretty damn busy. I just assumed all malls were dying but that one was still very much alive/csb

We have one mall in my area that is struggling. The rest are thriving. The one closest to me is always busy and my kids say that one isn't even anywhere close to as busy as a couple of the other ones in the area.

LOL. That is the mall closest to where I live. We are at that mall pretty regularly. It is annoying how busy it is. The other ones I was talking about is cherry creek mall and park meadows. My kids go there just to mix it up and they say they are even busier than the Mills.

And maybe you shouldn't have ammo.

Many of the malls here in NJ are doing very well. Short Hills, a luxury mall, is packed routinely as is Jersey Gardens (outlet mall) near Newark airport.
