While observed on an eaglecam, an eaglet in a Pennsylvania nest was seen swallowing a fish hook/lure while being fed by a parent. Officials were notified and the eaglet was removed and sent to West Virginia for surgery the same day. They say it could be returned to the nest in a week.

Just took a screenshot of the Big Bear Valley eagle nest with the sun slanting in:

So the Duke Farms eaglet is starting to test out his wings.

Big Bear Valley chicks are getting big fast!

The eaglet was returned to its nest and according to reports "has been seen receiving food from his parents, playing with sticks, and sleeping alongside his siblings."

Kewl. Of course now he's gonna be unmercifully teased by his siblings.

Duke eaglet got attacked twice at about 9:30 last night by an owl not that much bigger than the chick. It swooped in once from each direction and seemed to try to snatch the eaglet...but the eaglet just shrugged off both attempts. It seems unusual to me that the parents seem to leave the chick alone far more often than previous years when there was more than one baby in the nest. They stop by for feedings and the occasional visit, but mostly the eaglet is alone in the nest...especially at night.
Let's hope this visiting by the owl isn't a nightly occurrence.

Wow! Glad the chick is ok. I always assumed at least one parent was nearby but maybe not. Thanks for the update - I'll have to check the video out.

Meanwhile at Big Bear Jackie and Shadow seem to be in a daily scrap with a couple of ravens. Probably the same two birds that destroyed the first batch of eggs that Jackie laid. Luckily they don't seem to leave their eaglets alone anywhere near the length of time that the Duke parents do.
And I had two deer in my backyard this morning.....one of them feeding on one of my rose bushes.
I've had enough of nature for one day.

Here's a link to the video - the attacks come at 9:18 and 9:19

Duke Farms eaglet has fledged...about 8:30 p.m.
Parents nearby.
So his fledge was a little premature as he was not able to get back to the nest until this morning. He's been hopping around on the lower branches of some nearby trees since then. Purportedly was attacked by the neighborhood owl last night, knocking him off his branch. I guess that gave him the impetus to get his *** home.

The fish one of the parents brought to the nest might have inspired him as well.
