Been saying this for months now! Sometimes the most obvious reason for something is, the most obvious reason…

Does (at least in part) Pope’s inability to sign star players, and the reason he was hired to begin with, starting to make sense now?

I was roasted on here for suggesting, what is unfortunately, UK’s financial reality.

It's been UKs reality for over 75 yrs. It just returned to the forefront because the NCAA went back to the pay to play model.

Last time I checked UL was in Kentucky, even though they are different conference, they do not have a problem with donations. The new AD has got to find a way to get donations
There are more available sources of cash in Louisville than Lexington. They also get aid, not simply equipment, from Adidas, the university kicks in a few million ( not sure if UK athletics still transfers a few million to the school),they have taken out a line of credit And they still have a sweetheart deal with Yum. UK received more media money than Louisville but the courts ruled that players get about $22M and schools cannot use their income to pay players— it has to come from outside.

Yea it might be because people can barely afford groceries much less give to a university the majority of them didn’t even go to.
We just do not have enough billionaire donors like these other schools to compensate.
Just imagine if even a little bit of this insane money being spent on athletics went to funding cancer research or autism research, etc.
Texas had a 167 million dollars given. Just dumb.
I will agree with you. The NIL and portal have both destroyed college athletics. Only 10-15 schools can compete in football and basketball. With the demise of the coal industry in Ky it is now one of the poorest states in America. Congress has to act on this foolishness but they won’t.

I wasn’t as clear as I should have been. I didn’t use term rev share but that term generally refers to the players share of a school’s media income. All other monies that a player gets has to come from outside sources. The black holes are the collectives which were originally going to be curtailed but yet another court found issue with this and basically remained intact. Even if they ever declared players employees and set a salary cap it wouldn’t eliminate players from signing NIL deals but might eliminate the collectives. For example the NFL has a salary cap but Mahomes can sign outside deals. MLB also has a salary cap with penalties if a team exceeds it. Guess what? The Dodgers simply pay the penalty and have a loaded roster. And Ohtani can still sign NIL deals.

Imagine if it even took millions of dollars to cure cancer...

Trillions have been donated to cancer "research" and no one is putting any of that towards prevention so much as "catching it in time" to try to kill it AFTER it's already been given.

Our whole system is built on the same bs like this.
Congrats. This may just be the dumbest damn post I’ve ever read on here. Just outstanding work.

Congress is the only thing that can make a change at this point. Until there are specific laws in place, this will just continue.
