Always knew it was poor and densely populated, but didn’t know the extent of it.

TIL it is roughly the size of Iowa and has a population of ~173 million.

Wow!
Iceland is 1.8 times the size of Iowa and has a total population about the size of the Quad Cities at around 390,000 persons.

98% of the population lives within the “capital district” in and around Reykjavik. Nearly the entire interior is empty - consisting primarily of lava fields and glaciers.

I’ve never been, but I have been to the slums of Mumbai and I’m guessing there are close similarities. One of the HR people from an office I was responsible for in Mumbai literally grew up in that type of situation (straight up slumdog millionaire surroundings) and showed me the place he grew up.

Pretty eye opening place. Amazing people, some surprisingly advanced creature comforts, but then raw sewage out in the open right next door.

Come to think of it, the raw sewage makes it more like Iowa than one might expect.

Manila has a population density of 45,000 people per kilometer. More than twice as dense as Beijing and Shanghai
I spent a couple days there once for a conference. I don't know if I saw the most dense part of the city but waht i saw was enough. Gives a renewed appreciation for how good things are here.

Was just there a couple weeks ago for meetings and stayed a few extra days to see the island water falls and glacier. It was cold, weight, and rainy most of the time but still a beautiful island in its own regard/aspects. CSB.

Wife and I were there for a week at the end of April. I love the place - amazing food and super nice people. Crazy clean city too.

India was definitely the place that I've been that was the most different from the US (i.e.: least "Westernized"). The level of poverty I saw is something that doesn't really exist in the US - at least not to the degree, and in the numbers, that it exists there.

Yep. The only places I’ve seen come close to it were favelas in Brazil and shanty towns in Johannesburg, although both were viewed at a distance.

A lot of 2nd world countries have some third world slums.

Mine was mostly training with the Honduras airborne unit in the mountainous jungle. We did get a day or 2 of structured leave to visit very little of the country.

Are you talking Golden Pheasant days? Doesn't sound like it but don't want to assume I was working out of Soto Cano. (Palmerola)

Flew into Soto Cano. I was there for a month long deployment as an "interpreter" for my Guard battalion. I think, start to end, our state battalion was there for 2 months, total. I was there for the first two deployments of our companies. Summer of 1993.

Ha! Hope both clubs on the US side of the airfield were still open. Both were good. At that time i was part of the engineer shop, doing recon and confirming things for projects that NG units rotatintg into country might want to do. BOM's, strip maps etc. etc. I had it good, I got to roam all ovever the country... a young me took advantage of that.

As stated, it’s expensive but you just deal with it. We had a conference so we used services affiliated with the hotel so think they take advantage of you because of that with shuttles to and from the airport. We stayed in a VRBO after the conference for two nights and toured the island with a guide part of Friday and all day Saturday. Those prices weren’t bad, food was expensive but not a lot you can do when you want to have a nice meal after walking and hiking all day in the cold.
