I think they got hosed. That being said our track coach told our kids multiple times how strict some of the officials can be.

I mean 1st there kids

2nd: What kids do u know doesn’t show emotions esp when this would been there 5th state title - 3rd straight and also the kid broke the NC record n its was ranked 5th nationally

Also 3rd: we have seen way more egregious taunts and unsportsmanlike behavior in other sports so what make track so special?

This a massive over reach unless there is large backstory about the supposed warning that occurred earlier. Even with a warning, this isn’t taunting because he taunts no one and there is no way it could be viewed as excessive celebration.

Even the event he got warned at i dont even think that was excessive i mean did he jump up n down n fist bump friends n even his opponent but I still dont think it was Unsportsmanlike esp when he fist bumped his opponents so

I think the rule on this is little bit too excessive. They throw up their hands all the time in the Olympics. This kid probably be going to the Olympics.

Is the rule silly? Yes.

Is it a rule that coaches and players were told about during their pre event meeting with officials? Yes.

Was the kid warned after a perceived first offense? The official says so, and officials are never wrong or biased....

Did others make gestures? Yes, and were either warned or it was after finish lines where it is permitted, as Ive been told by people there.

Will Mallard Creek make shirts that say "real champs"? Probably.

I've watched Nyan Brown practicing the last 4 years at Mallard Creek. He's just an awesome young man. 3.7 GPA, with a laid-back demeanor. It's just not in his DNA to make gestures showing up competition. The kid broke a record from 2007, that's 19 years, and showed emotion.

I was at the track meet and watched this race. It wasn't apparent to me that Mallard Creek was DQ'd after the race and I didn't know about it until I got home (BTW, go to the state track meet if you haven't, it's great). As far as I'm concerned "taunting" has to be directed at someone else and holding up your hand as if to say "this is where I'm going to wear my ring" doesn't qualify. I hope Mallard Creek is successful in their appeal.

The main problem, to men is that throughout the track season there aren't to many meets where they have certified track officials at every spot to regulate rules. So some rules get overlooked throughout the season. Track doesn't have an officials agency/group that the NCHSAA can get with to emphasize, change and/or rules/enforce more throughout the season. Alot.of the times its coaches or.parents helping run the regular season meets except for when teams go to big Invitationals. Even then, you still have coaches/volunteers there to assist running things. Then at the State meet, you have certified officials and they may DQ someone for something that the athletes have been doing all season.

STATEMENT FROM NCHSAA:

MALLARD CREEK/ C.E. JORDAN DECLARED 8-A MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD CO-CHAMPIONS

Following a decision by the Independent Interscholastic Athletic Appeals Board administered by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Board of Directors convened in a special meeting on Tuesday morning to consider the matter involving the conclusion of the 2026 8A Men’s Track and Field State Championship.

The Appeals Board vacated the disqualification from the 4×400 relay. After review and discussion, the NCHSAA Board of Directors voted to declare Mallard Creek High School and C.E. Jordan High School as co-champions of the 2026 NCHSAA 8A Men’s Track and Field State Championship. The Board also voted to recognize Mallard Creek High School and Hough High School as co-champions in the men’s 4×400-meter relay.

The NCHSAA appreciates the work of the Independent Interscholastic Athletic Appeals Board and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction throughout this process. The Association thanks the student-athletes, coaches, school administrators, officials, and member schools involved, including Mallard Creek High School, for using the appeals process provided under state law and NCHSAA policy. That process is designed to promote fairness by enabling informed review of officiating decisions that result in disqualification or suspension.

“We recognize that this situation has been emotional for the student-athletes, coaches, schools, and communities involved,” said NCHSAA Commissioner Que Tucker. “At the center of this matter are young people who have invested countless hours into their sport and their team. We appreciate the work of the Independent Interscholastic Athletic Appeals Board and respect the process that led to today’s outcome. We are pleased that this matter has reached a resolution and that the accomplishments of the student-athletes involved can be recognized.”

The NCHSAA remains committed to fair competition, sportsmanship, and the educational mission of interscholastic athletics. The Association recognizes the efforts of all those who participated in the review process.
