If you added my 10 through 12 grade gpa's together I still wouldn't have been the valedictorian at my school.

Our public school has done away with class rank - only the top 2 find out that they’re valedictorian/salutatorian. No ties that I’m aware of - we have a pretty challenging grading system that naturally sorts itself out (not a lot of kids just cruising through with 98+ in all classes). Doesn’t seem to have impacted college placement.
my son was high school valedictorian and now has a PhD in mechanical engineering from Georgia Tech. Graduated PhD with 4.0 GPA and is lead engineer at a start up you possibly will be hearing about in coming years. (I remember when you were BWLion and posted some snarky stuff on Test board about my kids taking easy classes to keep their hope scholarships....hahahahahahahaha.............)

2 is too many. As a retired teacher, I can tell you a big factor in this. GRADE INFLATION. The better the grades a teacher gives out, the less grief they receive. I knew one guy who gave out all A's. Why? Parents thought he was great on top of the fact he was lazy.
Grade inflation is going nuts as every student is basically submitting the same essay
