I don’t get this with music. Why is it important to you that I have the same opinion as you? I’m not going down that path for this reason. If I gave you songs, then you would try to argue that my opinion is wrong and I honestly don’t care enough about Billy Joel to get into a pissing contest about him.
Like I said, if you like him listen to the hell out of his stuff.
YOU made the clam that Billy Joel wrote some schmaltzy songs and when I asked you to name some which in your opinion were schmaltzy you refused to do so and then gave some lame a** excuse claiming I would try to argue that they weren’t. Apparently you missed how I agreed with another poster who named one. Absolutely pathetic.

I haven't seen anyone mention Jason Isbell. But he has written some great songs, and I don't think he's done yet.

OK, if you’re intent on learning my opinion here it is. Keeping the Faith is schmaltzy crap. Mulberry Street (or something like that). Still Rock and Roll to Me. The lullaby song. We Didn’t Start the Fire (maybe not schmatzy, but crappy nonetheless). This is just a handful off the top of my head.
Again, this is all obviously just my opinion. Yours apparently differs. Enjoy it.

Well, it was more than just NYT writers polled. It was 250 musicians, executives, insiders, historians, etc. Only six NYT writers had input.
I'm just posting the opinion of a well known music producer, songwriter, engineer, and killer guitar player. And for the record, 250 others submitted ballots to develop a pool but the NYT writers made the final list.

Sure - but, in interviews I read and listened to consensus and input from ballots was important. That said, trying to cover a bunch of genres in one list is tough. And it’s completely subjective so there’s that too. Looking forward to listening to this.

Not the way it sounded from their interviews shown in the Beato video. I really don't care about the list. Not worth getting annoyed at something that I consider to be essentially meaningless. As someone who actually has written dozens of songs, it does irk me to listen to a bunch of non-musicians opining about something they have zero experience with. I'll take the opinion of someone like Beato who has a music degree, has produced, written, engineered, recorded, and is a killing guitarist.

While I get the purpose of these type of lists are subjective and designed to generate clicks, the omission of Billy Joel and Brian Wilson from this list almost invalidates it from the jump.

My opinion is that Billy Joel absolutely belongs on the list, despite having written some of the schmaltziest pop songs in the last 50 years. "The Stranger" was an absolutely brilliant album, but you can't tell me "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant" wasn't schmaltzy. And to me it got worse, as some of the examples upthread pointed out.

Maybe. But 150 million records sold, and 14.8 billion streams suggest he was doing something right. He is the 4th best selling solo artist in US history.
