Backwardsass Mississippi politics. A couple of boosters determined to run the program. 80 years later & we are still being punished for this idiocy.

It is apparent that the remains of some dead injuns were fans of McKeen. How can we appease them? That is the question we must answer

What I was always told by people who were around at the time was that some boosters didn’t like his offense and thought we could do better. The more Things change…….

We fired him in 1948, ending his coaching career at age 43. In 1991, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Gentlemen, I believe we have finally identified The Most Mississippi State Thing Ever.
I imagine he is in the HOF because he went on to run the Blue-Grey Game for a decades? I only know this because I read his wiki after @dawgstudent 's post.

Semi-hijack, but I recall the Blue-Grey game a sort-of big deal still in the 90s, but it seems like we've kinda forgotten about it.

I did not think we fired Darrell Royal, but perhaps we did. It certainly sounds on brand for us. I thought he just left for another job.

We actually have two former coaches who went on to win a National Championship at other schools - DK Royal at Texas and Murray Warmath at Minnesota.

If you’re a fan of Austin City Limits, Darryl Royal leaving MSU (and ending up at UT) may have been a blessing in disguise. That show was born in his Austin living room because of the postgame parties he hosted with Willie and other Austin musicians. Royal was inducted in the first class for the ACL Hall of Fame.

Bottom line, McKeen was our Vaught, before Ole Miss had Vaught. We ran him off when he was still a fairly young man, basically over offensive style. That is the single stupidest thing in our athletic history, and nothing else is even remotely close. We are STILL paying for it. It ain’t dead Indians, it’s the ghost of McKeen.

I have wondered the same thing many times. I have always assumed there must be a hell of a lot more to the story.

Such as, surely he was poking the wrong somebody a la Richard Williams.

Whatever. I certainly believe people who were alive at the time and lived it before I would believe YOU. One of them in particular was wired into everything for a LONG time. You are just trolling, as always.
I'm not sure why anyone who knows anything about Mississippi State would be surprised to hear that we ran a successul coach off over the style of offense he ran. Probably a spat over running the Single Wing vs the Wing T.
