As others have stated, the issue is that you have ZERO chance of signing a quality big whose going to come in and caddy for All American Ava Heiden. Its not going to happen and Jan knew that going in. Her job now is for her and Randi Peterson to get Layla ready.
I wasn't talking about getting a really good big...I just meant someone who could give a few minutes here or there in case of injuries...a 12th player who knows their minutes are sketchy. I agree there is a ZERO chance of getting a quality big....just hoping for that 12th player that can cover for emergencies. Carry on

I would imagine Jan already thinks that she can get that out of Layla. I would hope given what they're paying her to be the HC and her almost 30 years as a college coach she'd have better insight then us.

I hope Ava Heiden learns to better control her fouls to play more than the 25 mpg she played last season. Layla Hays probably will have 10 mpg, so there's almost no PT left for a possible third big. I would like to have another big / 12th player just for safety, but it wouldn't be anyone who could replace an All-American big like Ava Heiden, and she wouldn't be anyone better than Layla Hays either.
I thought ava actually got some better at the ticky tack fouls as the season went on. Maybe next year she'll be even more improved at it

Playing time of course, money not so sure
We'll never know. That's most likely why Deal ended up at Wisconsin. I would think that there's a correlation between playing time and money if only because any player that's starting is worth more to any team than a back bencher. Iowa surely has significantly more money than Davidson, but Iowa isn't going to spend money on a player that rarely sees action whereas Davidson might be willing to pay a few more dollars in this case for a player they see playing a lot of minutes.

Different players have different priorities. Davidson has an enrollment of 2000 yet competes in 21 D1 sports; Evansville similar size. Drake by contrast 5000; U of I 31,000. Maybe realizes college will be the end of her basketball career, wants to play as much as possible, and get a degree from a school where academics truly are the #1 priority. I would have liked to have landed her but best wishes to her.

I think Steph Curry is currrently supporting his Alma mater

Going to guess Davidson has almost zero dollars for women's bball NIL. Why come to Iowa to possibly never see the floor vs possibly being a starter somewhere else? I'd imagine it's about playing time.

She apparently visited Iowa and hasn't announced her decision yet, so who knows? But if Jan is really going to play with 4 out, a guard can play at the 4 at some point, so I think Heiden and Hays as the only bigs on the roster is fine.

Think Jan will help answer the style of play next year vs this past season.

If the style of play wasn’t answered before (like I thought it was), it is now. Jan literally said “Journey could backup the 4” (because in the new offensive scheme the 4 and 3 are very similar - ‘facing up’ from the perimeter).

I think from that can be interpreted two things; McKenna is the primary 4 and Journey will split time between the [logically possible starting] 3 and a backup role at the 4.

You would be guessing wrong on Davidson not having a lot of NIL for wbb. Curry, Berman and Curry's wife set up an 8 figure fund for men's and women's bb.

I think probably both playing time and $$ factored into her decision

Also Davidson's roster is like 80% international, so maybe she liked that too

Why not then, stay where you are? She probably would have played more next year.

I understand her leaving with the coach getting fired and most of the roster leaving

I guess if she does well at Davidson, she will transfer again to a power 4 school with bigger pockets

You need to find a new team to cheer for because this "problem" isn't going to be solved anytime in the next few seasons. There is no quality big who is going to sign on to play alongside these two players. Even if Jan wanted to spend another $500k+ on a third rotation player at the 5 (ps $500k is probably 17%-18% of our entire budget), it would be a terrible use of funds and hold us back from recruiting at other positions where we actually have minutes. It's just not gonna happen. Ava is going to be our star Center and play 25-30 minutes a game. Layla will get the rest, and we could do a lot worse than Layla (in case you forgot, many teams don't even have a single true C).
Let’s not tell people what they need to do just because they don’t agree with you….

If they added a center in the portal it was going to be someone that showed even less than Layla Hays because you aren't going to find a center worth anything that would like to join a room with Ava and Layla.

I also think Layla has a lot of skill and will be very different next season.

If she turns out any good she'll go to Iowa next year!

Agree. I think ALOT of her issue was the speed of the game and her comfort level.

If you assume the worst (unless… improvement), then a negative outcome (issue) is a logical conclusion. But the opposite is also true.

I say if she puts in the conditioning that I believe she will, she will be the best backup center that the Hawkeyes have seen in maybe forever.

Layla had a couple things going against her. 1. The level of competition she played was much much lower than she had previously played. 2. The post positions are generally the toughest for players to adjust to. 3. The speed was a little fast and she lost some confidence.

For her size she had quite a few blocked shots. A lot of that had to do with some body position tweaks and a lack of hops. My guess is she will have much fewer this year. Continue to work on her footwork and the hands and development of moves and she will be much better than whatever we got out of Goodman - and that is no diss on Sharon.

Hope you are right, but jury is still out given she is only as freshman
