I've stated this before but I think Florida is more State/OM than Alabama/LSU in regards to football...

I agree with your tiers with some footnotes. This is a sliding scale though with some level of recency bias. Ole Miss would have been tier 4 from the early 70's until 2022-2023, Florida would have spent 1990-2015 in tier 1, Tennessee was tier 1 1990-2010. Every school in tier 3 is a lot closer to tier 4 than tier 2. Auburn is at least trending toward tier 3 and may be there now.

Well Bama without Bryant & Saban isn’t all that great either.
Yeah i came here to say this. Its cyclical.

At any given time Texas, Georgia, Alabama, LSU, Florida, Oklahoma can be tier 1 (they've hall proven that over the years). Tennessee can be but haven't done it in years. Texas A&M has the resources but always stumbles.

Definitely a sliding scale for the top tier and second tier (some of them). Ole Miss definitely getting some recency bias.

When you talk about tiers, to me it's more about program potential. It transcends coaches.

In that vein Florida is absolutely Tier 1. They've made some absolutely idiotic hires over the years, including the one they just made.

Outside of Spurrier and Meyer - they are pedestrian.

Yes when I think of programs comparable to State, I too think of Florida with their 13 appearances in the SEC championship game, their 8 SEC championships, and their 3 national championships. I also think about their 3 Heisman winners, 9 college football hall of famers, and 89 first-team All Americans. Mississippi State and Florida, definitely two peas in a pod.

Take away 1990-2010 where they were ridiculously dominant - what have they done? And don't count those weak SEC East titles under McElwain.

They were pretty good from 2018-2020. And the Charley Pell years won a couple of SEC championships (later vacated but who cares about that).

Didn't Bear Bryant say "If Flarda ever hires a good football coach, the rest of the conference will be playing for 2nd place"?

I would switch Oklahoma and LSU.

Outside of Saban, historically LSU isn't exactly elite. The 3 titles they have in the last 25 years were Saban, Saban's players with Les, and one amazing season with O.

So other than a brief 30 year stretch, they are just not all that special. That's your position?

20 year stretch. State would have won the East about 3 times under Mullen.
Unfortunately the status of a program isn't based off of hypotheticals. If we were in the East we also would not have made the 98 SEC championship game.

If we want to take away their 2 best coaches and say they are pedestrian then take away our 2 best coaches and ask what we are. Closer to abysmal than pedestrian

Which goes back to my original point - outside of those 20 years - they are closer to us than LSU or Bama.

What's really sad is, even outside those years, they're probably still closer to LSU & Bama than us. 20 ranked seasons, including 6 in the top 10 vs 18 ranked with 1 top 10 for us (note this is in 20 fewer years for them).
