Major Dirt coming out on Fran & Margaret (who was heckling from the crowd) related to a Coaches vs Cancer event

None of that is surprising. Fran, his wife, and their boys have always come across as whiny, thin skinned, entitled, jerks.

But it’s time to move on and put his era to rest. When you move on from an ex it’s best to enjoy your new situation and leave the bad times in the rear view mirror.
Connor, Marge and Fran can burn in hell... I will go easy on the other 3, Patrick seemed like a nice and goofy kid who could have enjoyed life a thousand miles away from a basketball court. It's too bad his family made him play and sent him in depression...

That story is so overblown. Where was the outrage when Mike Tyson, Marshawn Lynch, and Myles Garrett walked out with him? Where is the outrage for athletes who hang out with Drake or Chris Brown?

There is a group of people looking to tear CC down for anything and everything she does. She should do what she wants and smile all the way to the bank.
Thank you. Thank you! For Christs sake WHEN are people going to stop trying to hold her responsible for all these tangent issues. Some of the posters here are almost as bad as the haters on Reese's side. Let her live her life, unless she does something that's really egregious that harms someone.

Of course a lot of Fran’s players (mostly the guards) like him. They wouldn’t have played almost anywhere else in major college basketball!

Are you daft? So Joe cool, and the Murray brothers (all mentioned in his post) wouldn't have played D1? REALLY?

I really think Caitlin needs to cut her ties to the McCaffery family.

When people have time, I really encourage them to skip ahead to the 44:00 mark and watch/listen to the 12 minute discussion. It really is cringe worthy.

Really? So now were giving dating/love advice? Good lord, this is a sports website. Maybe she love the guy. I don't know, and I don't care, and frankly I don't see why posters on here think they need to be giving her dating advice.

Fran & Margaret tried to get Gary fired on 2 different occasions:

* In November 2018, Dolphin found himself in hot water after he criticized the program’s recruiting efforts and made comments directed at Iowa guard Maishe Dailey that inadvertently made it to air during a commercial break.

“How do we not get anybody like that?” Dolphin said. “We just don’t -- year after year. Just get one. We get Maishe Dailey. Dribbles into a double team with his head down. God.”

* On Feb 21, 2019, Gary referred to Maryland’s Bruno Fernando as “King Kong” during the closing moments of the game. Hawkeye Sports Properties, the multimedia rights manager for Iowa’s athletic department, then announced that Dolphin would be suspended for the rest of the season.

I thought that I saw where the Maryland player considered it a compliment.

Connor called into Barstool Sports during Iowa's run to the Elite 8 and told Dave Portnoy (the founder of BarStool Sports) to stop talking badly about his father.

There are so many examples/red flags when it comes to how the McCafferys behave and treat people.

If Connor & Caitlin get married, Fran & Margaret are part of the deal, too. Maybe Fran & Margaret would be great in laws, but, again, there are a lot of red flags....

Old news..why dredge it up now?

Fran's ex- players seem to like him..are Luka,Murray bros, woody, super Joe,ect now all persona non grata because they don't bad mouth their former coach?

Move on.
Show me players that ever badmouth the coach they chose to play for in college. Just doesn't happen. Except for MAYBE the guy Bob Knight choked in practice (I forget the player's name).

Just wait until Fran and Margaret are grandparents and so old they can't control themselves at a little league game.

Sorry, but whatever she decides I won't be on some website suggesting how she should handle her personal affairs, and I don't see why any fan should think that's their place. For some reason because of her fame as it relates to the U of I people think they have license to suggest what she should say, or do, and who she should associate with. I find that perplexing.

And should that happen I'm sure they'd be removed (for good) and that would solve the problem. If we're talking about Caitlins offspring, she might get tossed before them anyway. She gets pretty hot, and has certainly been known to not hold back on letting officials know her thoughts.

Wow, did not know that happened. Basically, Connor was USING CC as leverage over Portnoy. Without CC, Portnoy never takes that call.

  • The Confrontation: Connor McCaffery reportedly called Portnoy to express disappointment over the criticism of his father’s legacy, calling the comparison to the new coach disrespectful.
  • Portnoy's Response: Portnoy discussed the call on his show, noting the tension, and stated that a McCaffery (implied to be Connor) was put on the phone to voice complaints.
  • Caitlin Clark Involvement: Reports suggest Caitlin Clark blocked Portnoy on social media following the incident, with Portnoy stating on Barstool Live that he was "ghosted" by her after the run-in.
  • Context: The friction arose during Iowa's surprising 2026 Elite Eight run under new coach Ben McCollum. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Put me in the half that wanted him gone because he isn’t good at his job. The racial slur? Makes me chuckle, sin of omission rather than commission. Far overblown.
As far as the McCafferys and former players go…… heaven forbid someone support the current program. Connor will unfriend you. For someone who played the gritty tough guy on the court he is certainly soft off the court.
Connor is a fake tough guy. He wouldn't last an hour locked up...

May be time four dumb a$$ @CRazzle to learn how to spell so that he can properly tag people on here.

Oh, and for the record, just because I hate both major political parties and am registerd as an independent does not suddenly make me "MAGA." Me saying that Trump was & is unfit for office since 2015 does not suddenly make me "MAGA." Me saying Tim Walz is an idiot and incompetent does not suddenly make me "MAGA." You thinking that any of it does, however, makes you look like a MEGA dumb a$$.

Opinions being expressed on a message board? Never heard of such a thing. Surely a sign the apocalypse is near.
If we get another extreme sign, something like you having a good post that would be two of three signs.

All 4 head coaches from the four Iowa DI MBB programs attended the recent event where they raised over $700,000 for Coaches vs Cancer (C vs C). Keith Murphy, from WHO TV, was the emcee after a 8 year absence.

Why was Keith absent for the last 8 years?

Well, in 2018, Keith pointed out on his "Murphy’s Law" TV segment that Fran had gotten an unnecessary new contract extension (deal was signed on Nov 29, 2017) when Fran wasn’t going anywhere and then Gary Barta did not make it public. Scott Dochterman had to do a FOIA to get the details of the contract extension (the details were revealed on January 25, 2018). Keith’s commentary was that if you think that highly of your head coach to give him more years & more money, you should make it public and not hide it from the public. Instead, Gary, Fran, etc. tried to keep the extension quiet because Iowa was off to a bad start during the 2017-18 season. Well, Fran & Margaret did not take Keith's commentary well at all. When Keith & Andy Fales asked about the extension at the time it became public, Fran got all defensive and pissed off from the questioning.

That 2017-18 season then ended (Iowa went 14-19) & then the May, 2018 C vs C event occurred with Keith again as the emcee. At the event, Fran & Margaret avoided Keith entirely (no handshakes, no nothing). They both were still very pissed off at Keith.

Margaret, incredibly, started heckling Keith from the audience. At a cancer fundraising event.

At no time prior did Keith say that Fran should be fired. However, Margaret then took the stage and said “thank you for welcoming me, unlike our emcee here, who wants my husband fired.” After the heckling and then Margaret saying that, Keith said everyone in the audience was uncomfortable AT A CANCER EVENT. Keith tried to go up to Fran & Margaret & talk to them but Fran & Margaret avoided Keith. Keith then called the Iowa athletic dept to set up a time to speak to Fran and clear the air. Fran refused to meet with Keith.

Fran would never again appear on the “Murph and Andy” radio show. Listeners wanted to know why Fran never appeared and Keith “wanted to put a sock in it” and would not explain why.

Fran then insisted that Keith stop being invited to emcee the C vs C event. Fran told the organizers that “if you want me to participate in this [moving forward], you find another emcee.”

Keith’s wife was pissed off after hearing Fran's demand but Keith reminded her that it was not “Emcee vs Cancer.” It was “Coaches vs Cancer” and Fran had to be there. The C vs C folks were put in an impossible spot so Keith bowed out and got replaced starting in May, 2019. Keep in mind that this has always been a Friday night, unpaid gig for the emcee. Fran wanted Keith gone & he got what he wanted.

With Fran fired and Ben the new head man, the C vs C folks asked Keith to come back and emcee the event this year.

Keith starts getting emotional talking about all of this at the 51 minute mark in the video that follows.

They then bring up and discuss that Fran & Margaret tried to get Gary Dolphin fired TWICE.

Wow. Just freakin’ wow.

Skip ahead to the 44:00 mark and watch/listen to the 12 minute discussion.

Weird goings on. Fran and wife seemed like they were owed perfect allegiance. They were not to be judged. well not knowing a lot about them but knowing Margaret was kicked out of a high school type game for bad behavior towards ref(s), then it seems pretty bad

The badmouthing of a player on air probably is a fireable offense tbh. If I were in Fran’s position, I would have the same position. It doesn’t matter that it was unintentional.

Funny you should mention. I’ve posted this before and happened over a decade ago. Fairly early on in Fran era. Playing softball in CR and sometimes a little league game playing on one of the diamonds next to ours. Typical loud mouth Karen arguing pitches. Then everyone started talking and pointed out Fran when he arrived. Eventually sitting down next to the Karen and that’s when we realized it was large Marge. After that all the stories I heard about her never surprised me.

It was never really "news;" there were just rumors and Keith wanted to keep the story quiet.

Keith, just now, admits that it ALL happened.

And was Fran's boycott of WHO radio "old news" to you?

I didn't know anything about this. Never seen the show. Don't know Keith and don't know Andy. Watching that 12 minutes; my read is that Keith didn't want to talk about it, had put it in the past and was trying to be graceful.

Andy, sour grapes, had to scratch that itch and put Keith in a very uncomfortable spot that Keith didn't want to be in. If Andy needed to vent, he should've done it on his own and not with Keith there. Not fair to Keith and not what you do to a friend.

Agree in some respects, but I never heard of it and it should be out in the open. What a sh*tty think for the McCaffrey's to do and Keith handled it like a professional.

So glad Barta and Fran are gone.
