America is powerful because of geographical and historical context, not because its people or systems are exceptional. There isn't a nation that comes anywhere close to our geographic setup...two huge moats surrounding dozens of warm-water ports, the largest area of arable land, a country to our north that has no top-soil, a nation to our south that is mostly mountains, massive amounts of coal, oil, natural gas, and it was isolated following the last ice age from Asia and Europe so it couldn't settled and dominated until the last 200 years.

Our education system is a product of an upstart civilization which grew exceptionally wealthy on opportunism and immigration and not education, The spirit of America is to come up with an idea and steal the solution from a less "savvy" person and apply that en masse because we have the size and resources to scale everything. One example of the differences between the new and old is the memoirs of soldiers from world war II. German soldiers are constantly quoting Kant or Hegel, or writing or reading poetry...their points of view are existential or moral. America soldiers are quoting comics, drawing pictures of pin-ups, or talking sports. Our education system comes from easy money, easy luxury of being America. It generally just gets in the way of our fun. And that how parents and students treat it.
So, is what you're saying is, you're retarded, and don't understand what has really happened?

You could have banged all but 4.
Probably not. Those big burly women were some great teachers. Big German gals. I had them up until 8th grade. I knew they cared about me, and It made me care too. They're just good teachers, and good women.

Do you just like to type to be wrong? I like history. It's a hobby. We can go thru your other thoughts if you wish, but you don't get to make up facts.

From 1900 through the mid-20th century, the United States led the world in education, creating the first widely accessible, mass-secondary school system. By 1940, over 75% of teens were in secondary school, and the U.S. was ranked #1 in high school and college education before experiencing a relative decline in global rankings by the late 20th century. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Most people have zero idea how good the school system is in America. People in other countries do all they can to get their kids here for school. High school and college.

Do some countries do it better? Sure, of course. But there is this weird idea, from Americans, that the schools in America are horrible. It is flat out wrong.

I agree. There are bad districts, but it's mostly an excellent education. It's been 27 years since I've been in highschool but not everyone is suited to a 4 year college degree after graduation. I think the schools are catching up with occupational programs. I left UNL as a junior before I realized it wasn't for me. Kids have better choices now.

Was. Most European countries send their kids here to get their driver's license that save them thousands. In my experience they laugh at our education

Maybe if the schools went back to the basics reading writing and arithmetic , civics or gov classes but today’s schools spent way too much on sports and other activities, then you have teachers that groom kids.

I think that has more to due with the parents and culture than the teaching provided. Look at our flyover states. We rate highly in everything despite having a large population of ESL. I don't think we need to spend more on education. We spend over 20k per student per year. That's kind of crazy. I dunno. It's a problem.

I don't even know why this is in this thread but I appreciate the reading and admit I shouldn't generalize a nation with politics, geography, and people as complicated as ours. And my anecdotes about European armies are certainly not representative of reality. Certainly stupid of me to equate that an army that was robbing and killing Europe was somehow more sophisticated than America, Just a stupid post.

Not because it's people or systems are exceptional? Germany became a country in 1871. Spain in 1492 and over hundreds of years for the UK to arrive at its current form in 1927. We dominate them in everything. They trade with our dollar. What are you babbling about?

So now schools don't teach reading, writing or math.

I always say that it is not the kids that are different today but that it is the adults and it is so accurate.

Why do you keep bumping the same paragraph? Americans are best, we are a unique people who have no ties to any other places, our democracy is unique and has never been employed whatsoever by any other people because we are so smart, and our national geography has no implications on our success just our work ethic, strength, smarts, and overall "natural superiority". You win, I lose.

Can I ask, if you don't mind, what your experience with that might be?
Saw it first hand. Between my parents and aunt and uncle, they hosted over 10 foreign exchange students. ALL of them said it was the utmost importance that they get their driver's license while here. Free driver's education and fee for license is minimal. In Europe you have to ( atleast it was 20-35 years ago) take mandatory driver's training. At that time was 5-6k. If they could get a Nebraska driver's license, they could convert that to an international driver's license back home. Pretty sweet deal for them. They loved coming to rural areas where they knew they would get plenty of practice and experience

So as a non-resident they got a Nebraska license that then could transfer over to a license in Europe? That is wild.

I didn't know that.

So 30 years ago a 16 or so year old kid has to pay 5 or 6 thousand to take a drivers training to get a license. How would anyone have a license over there.Thats almost impossible to believe.

On top of that I believe they don't get as many privileges as we did back then. There's more restrictions on initial teenagers license here.

Yes that's the price. That's why they come/came here and the American experience. Most said our education was subpar but also different. Usually by 14 you were split between those going to college, trade school or flat out ditch digger
