Benge has been good in May. Not all players hit right away so let's see if he's figured it out and continues to play well. Defensively and base running he's been above average since day 1. Young players have a lot of ups and downs before their established. Ewing has tools like Benge that should help the team even if he struggles to start as well. He looked like he has a great idea at the plate regardless.

The trade of Nimmo , McNeil and non re-signing of Alonso weren't done in a vacuum for only this season. The team should 100% have a better record than it does right now that by all means is obvious and get on Stearns for that if you want. I didn't think the offense would be this bad. No one really did and some of that is mentioned above. As I said the other night as well maybe relying on Vientos Baty and Alvarez to perform consistently was stupid.

The pitching and defense so far has been really good this season and that's with again the vets Senga, Manaea, DP not being great.

There's so much time left I still think they can compete this year but baby steps. The constant whining here and LOLMets from the public in general is so annoying at this point. Not saying those last sentences are you.

Agree- none of each move is done in a vacuum. But that is also baffling. Because- none of the moves really make long term sense either unless Nimmo/McNeil/Alonso were blocking our superstars from coming up through the system. Maybe Nimmo but for long term, he and Soto really could be taking needed time as DH. So, Benge would still have been up. And it really isn't about worrying about their contacts if these guys are here and we are winning and still drawing 3 million fans.
We have no kid that Alonso would be blocking. And McNeil- I don't care as much about him but he is sort of the best kind of utility guy you can have. plays many positions and plays them pretty well. You don't have to give him 500+ AB's and he is not blocking anyone. And Stearns brought in a bum for much more money.
He brings in guys to play positions they have never played before and last year- he gave up tons of young kids to bring back bums. We are not sitting on a system with 5-6 kids that are either late this year or next year callups with + potential.

And he sits there with his smirk lying about everything he is doing.

This is Stearns problem. He hasn't showed us anything positive at all. And just lies about it.

Figured that was coming. Let's hope Torrens can float above water with the bat but at least we'll be getting great defense back there.

Senger up as backup.

No one ever told Alvarez 400 ft home runs count the same as 800 ft home runs
He would get into a groove hitting line drives the other way then he’d crush a couple of HR and follow them up with 1-22 12Ks streak.

amazing first season followed by injuries and disappointment

Don't blame the swing on his tear. Over a year ago, on New Year's Eve (2024), I went to sleep healthy and fine. New Year's Day, I woke up in pain. I tore my meniscus in my sleep. My doctor said when it's your time, it's your time. The injury would have occurred at some point because the body was stressed. You just can't see it or feel it until it happens.

Well you love to see that for a W!!

Of course with any positive comes more bad news with Soto leaving. Really hoping it's a day to day bruise thing.

To call Alvarez an underachiever, reminds me of the Henny Youngman one-liner when asked "How's your wife?" His response: "Compared to what?"

Compared to his one-time #1 prospect ranking, yeah definitely an underachiever. But that is now ancient history. The more relevant comparison is the universe of MLB catchers. Compared to THAT, Alvarez is OK. Not an all star, but not terrible. A starting MLB catcher. Good enough until someone better comes along, which won't be anytime soon.

The injuries and inconsistency have been a bummer but he's still so young that I wouldn't give up on that talent. Catchers take a long time to fully develop. He'll still only be turning 25 in November when the season ends.

Shrewd GMs whether in fantasy or MLB trade players when they still have value.

Alvarez is a bad defensive catcher / hits into too many double plays / is always hurt.

Trade him when he still has value.

Mets should have done same with Vientos and Baty and now they’re stuck with 2 guys who have minimal value.

Same will happen with Alvarez who has not matured as a hitter

they actually needed to find a way to let both Baty and Vientos play. In 2024, Vientos showed his potential- and 2nd half of last year- Baty showed his...and both were well above average during those periods.

MLB Prospects updated their Top 100 Prospects list. A.J. Ewing has soared up to #34, narrowly edging out Johan Tong at #36. No other Mets made the Top 100. Nolan McLean and Carson Benge have graduated.

Fantastic. Which years?
It's a nice feel good stat, but where do the Mets go from here?

Is this the beginning of something for this year? That would be nice, and while I'm an eternal optimist, this team obviously needs a complete 180 with injuries and sustained production from the "new" Mets, especially Semien, Bichette, and Polanco as well as the new kids in town, Benge and Ewing, who have been a breath of fresh air. And will Lindor return to form when he returns/

Barring a miraculous turnaround, the year is lost unless the entire NL Central crashes and burns. Every team in that division has a record above .500, while every team in the NL East except for the Braves has a record below .500, and the Mets own second worst record in the NL.

Sorry for the rant. But this is a Rutgers football board. Just like Rutgers football, it would be nice to cheer for a team vying for the "playoffs" instead of continually cheering for small victories while sitting a losing record.

Was looking back at other years, and it is waaaay too early to draw any comparisons to any other years, and this is in no way a comparison of the two players, but in 1983 (another horrific year), the Mets got a similar spark when Daryl Strawberry made his MLB debut on May 6, 1983. The year got marginally better, but it was a lost year.

7 games to make up with 119 to play. That's possible with a hot streak to counter that awful cold streak. Four with the Nats and six against the Marlins this month. Gotta put some Ws on the board in both series if you're going to make a run at it.
