Just curious…does anyone know if Ryan’s parents still live at Lake Murray? I know they stayed for a while after Ryan transferred and they are still very active in Hilinski Hope. We had such high hopes for Ryan and Brandon McIIwain and it didn’t work out for either of them at Carolina. I believe both were considered good recruits. They were both fine young men from good families. Brandon plays professional baseball in Italy. (We did have better luck with Spence Rattler…but he did not come in as a freshman. Wish we could have had him for four years.)

It's been ten years so Hilinski I don't remember so well as so many of these guys come and go and on forgettable teams sadly. I mainly remember Bentley taking over early in the 2016 season and being the starter for several years after that. I do remember McIIwain. His grandmother lives in White Hall in Irmo next to my buddy's parents. All I got.

The perpetual subpar status of our offensive lines does not provide our QBs the physical safety to stay four years. Most are advised by their family physicians to transfer sooner rather than later.

Rattler learned not to get rattled by the lack of protection. 😁

Hilinksi needed better protection to be able to develop and find a groove, I think. He never really improved his skills while at USC.

Oh, man. Brandon McIlwain. Talk about recruiting whiffs. His high school tape looked dynamic. He was electric with the ball in his hands. Then he got here and looked like he was running in quicksand with cinderblocks tied to his feet.

I still put Hilinksi in the "what might have been" category. The kid looked he had all the tools and could have developed into something with the right coaching. Unfortunately, he came here at a dismal time. I think that threw his whole college career off. But it happens. The history of college football is littered with "what might have been" stories.

I excitedly watched this ‘east-west’ national high school all-star game after Hilinski committed; with all the fanfare I expected to see a fully developed Tom Brady. He was…not. However, one of the qbs on the other team was a legit blue chip guy lighting it up effortlessly; Spencer Rattler. I remember feeling the envy I used to feel watching Spurrier coaching against us; the haves and the wannabes.

With Hilinski, at Beamers first meeting with players, he was in the front row pen and notepad looking interested and ingaged, I always think about who got in his ear after that meeting, and convinced him to transfer, or what he heard, his parents were pretty invested in being here, his family moved across the country, and he would of had a lot of playing time in Beamer's first season as it turned out, due to the injuries, he would of played before the grad student, LOL. Then where does his development go? You never know, maybe his career would have turned out differently? Or Maybe not.

That’s why I always hated seeing any fans critiquing Rattler like they actually understood what they were looking at. Rattler, AND the guy that transferred here from Colorado State, were the toughest guys I’ve ever seen in my life.
I thought Rattler should have been picked higher and given more chances in the Pro's. The other qb's were gtting 4 seconds and he was getting 2 1/2. The defenses knew it too so they could plan on covering for 2 1/2 seconds.

I think at the time Bobo was still in place as OC. Bobo had made it exceedingly clear that Hilinski would never play QB for him, for whatever reason.

I don't recall if he transferred before or after Bobo split town, though.

Bobo was another one who talked a good game but then proved himself to be a lying scumbag.
I don’t like Mike Bobo, but that was probably the best running game I’ve seen in my life at SC. We did it with guys that weren’t considered superstars either. If we had a Marcus Lattimore, or even Rico Dowdle that season, it would’ve been nuts. Kevin Harris was a nice back, and he’s had some time in the NFL… but that offense made him look like a stud.

Our issue that season was the defense couldn’t stop anybody…which is why Muschamp got fired after the Ole Miss game. I know we’ve had statistically better seasons in the run game. But for the first half of the season it felt like we ran at will. It tailed off a bit when it seemed like the team quit, specifically after the Ole Miss game. Our offense was a disaster after that, when Doty was playing QB.

Bobo knows how to get a run game going. He just doesn’t know how to put it all together offensively. Some of our wins against UGA we can thank him. They’d run all over us between the 20’s and then start throwing and settle for FGs.

You made me curious so I googled, Bobo left for Auburn on 1/7/21, and Hilinski transfer was annouced 12/30/20 and then annouced his destination as Northwestern on 1/19/21, so yes, good point,

Thomas Brown deserves alot of credit for that running game, and he has gone on to bigger and better things as a coach in the NFL. We had a very good runing back coach for one season.

I think Ryan’s living out of the Irmo area. He’s doing stuff with the Hilinski’s Hope foundation, and he’s holding a QB camp at River Bluff later this month.
