All 4 head coaches from the four Iowa DI MBB programs attended the recent Coaches vs Cancer charity event, where they raised over $700,000. Keith Murphy, from WHO TV, was the emcee after a 8 year absence.

Why was Keith absent for the last 8 years?

Well, in 2018, Keith pointed out on his "Murphy’s Law" TV segment that Fran had gotten an unnecessary new contract extension (deal was signed on Nov 29, 2017) when Fran wasn’t going anywhere and then Gary Barta did not make it public. Scott Dochterman had to do a FOIA to get the details of the contract extension (the details were revealed on January 25, 2018). Keith’s commentary was that if you think that highly of your head coach to give him more years & more money, you should make it public and not hide it from the public. Instead, Gary, Fran, etc. tried to keep the extension quiet because Iowa was off to a bad start during the 2017-18 season.

Here was Keith's commentary:

Well, Fran & Margaret did not take Keith's commentary well at all. When Keith & Andy Fales asked about the extension at the time it became public, Fran got all defensive and pissed off from the questioning.

That disappointing 2017-18 season then ended (Iowa went 14-19) & then the May, 2018 Coaches vs Cancer (C vs C) event occurred with Keith again as the emcee. At the event, Fran & Margaret avoided Keith entirely (no handshakes, no nothing). They both were still very pissed off at Keith.

Margaret, incredibly, started heckling Keith from the audience. At a cancer fundraising event.

At no time prior did Keith ever say that Fran should be fired. However, Margaret then took the stage and said “thank you for welcoming me, unlike our emcee here, who wants my husband fired.” After the heckling and then Margaret saying that, Keith said everyone in the audience was uncomfortable AT A CANCER FUNDRAISING CHARITY EVENT. Keith tried to go up to Fran & Margaret & talk to them but Fran & Margaret avoided Keith. Keith then called the Iowa athletic dept to set up a time to speak to Fran and clear the air. Fran refused to meet with Keith.

Fran would never again appear on the “Murph and Andy” radio show. Listeners wanted to know why Fran never appeared and Keith “wanted to put a sock in it” and would not explain why.

Fran then insisted that Keith stop being invited to emcee the C vs C event. Fran told the organizers that “if you want me to participate in this [moving forward], you find another emcee.”

Keith’s wife was pissed off after hearing Fran's demand but Keith reminded her that it was not “Emcee vs Cancer.” It was “Coaches vs Cancer” and Fran had to be there. The C vs C folks were put in an impossible spot so Keith bowed out and got replaced starting in May, 2019. Keep in mind that this has always been a Friday night, unpaid gig for the emcee. Fran wanted Keith gone & he got what he wanted.

With Fran fired and Ben the new head man, the C vs C folks asked Keith to come back and emcee the event this year.

Keith starts getting emotional talking about all of this at the 51 minute mark in the video that follows.

They then bring up and discuss that Fran & Margaret tried to get Gary Dolphin fired TWICE.

Wow. Just freakin’ wow.

Skip ahead to the 44:00 mark and watch/listen to the 12 minute discussion.

Yeah, that was uncomfortable. I vaguely remember the story but was always hoping it wasn't true. Lots of commentary tonight from many sources.

Sounding like this family was less liked than I thought...

Come on CC... read the writing on the wall.

CC is a little weird herself. She walked the tunnel with that dude that got caught dropping the n bomb

Many people tried telling everyone how bad they were, but Fran had his guard dogs on here. Too many fell into attacking those that knew.

Glad we have Ben.

I remember something about the rogue 2017 contract extension but I hadn't heard (or I forgot) about any of this regarding Keith Murphy, the C v C incident and such.

Heckling someone at a C v C benefit? Really, Margaret? Grow up. Seems like the entire McCaffery family is pretty thin-skinned.

I appreciate Fran digging the program up from the grave after the Lickliter years, but at this point, good riddance to the lot of em.

Pretty much any basketball coach in the country would have been an upgrade over Lickliter, so I don't think Fran deserves much credit for "bringing the program back." And given this info, it makes Barta look even worse, if that's possible. How the hell people like Barta and Fran keep their jobs for so long at a place like the U of Iowa baffles me. They didn't deserve those jobs and were as replaceable as a slice of bread. Thank goodness we finally have people of intergrity and transparency running things now with Beth Goetz and Ben McCollom.

Yeah, Lickliter was a low bar to clear. Even with what I said about Fran and the program, he won all of 4 NCAA games in a decade and a half, which is nothing to jump up and down about. Ben won almost that many in a single tournament... Then there is the topic of this thread, regarding the McCafferys as people. Not sorry that they're gone.

Barta.... Man, I shudder to think of what things would look like if he was still here. More than likely, Brian Ferentz would still be the OC and Fran would still be coaching the hoops program.

That story is so overblown. Where was the outrage when Mike Tyson, Marshawn Lynch, and Myles Garrett walked out with him? Where is the outrage for athletes who hang out with Drake or Chris Brown?

There is a group of people looking to tear CC down for anything and everything she does. She should do what she wants and smile all the way to the bank.

I had a run in with Fran at the Iowa vs Duke game at MSG and he was great. Couldn't have been a better rep for the university.

My sister used to work for the AD at Washington (and also at WISC) and she said he was brutal and an A** when she worked with him while we played our tourney game in Seattle. I was hoping she was overblowing it but numerous colleagues of hers confirmed Fran, Marge etc were really difficult to work with...

Further proof Barta was a cancer to the university. It's a miracle he bowed out of his own accord. These ridiculous extensions that he gave all coaches, the special treatment for Brian, it was all so awful.

Makes me even happier that Fran and the McCaffery's are gone. Needless to say that their reputation in Iowa City continues to dwindle by the day.

Seeing is temper tantrums for all those years it doesn’t surprise me.

they felt entitled.

Barta never made a tough decision on much.
agreed all the signs were obvious IMO

Old news..why dredge it up now?

Fran's ex- players seem to like him..are Luka,Murray bros, woody, super Joe,ect now all persona non grata because they don't bad mouth their former coach?

Move on.
Of course a lot of Fran’s players (mostly the guards) like him. They wouldn’t have played almost anywhere else in major college basketball!

No one's denying that Fran was a player's coach. He absolutely was. But that's not the argument. The argument is that he and his wife are complete jacka$$es to anyone they feel slighted by and made numerous attempts to have folks fired who didn't get in line with them.

Obviously not a good look for Fran concerning the C for C thing. But are we supposed to be mad about the Dolph thing now? Most of the media and half this message board wanted Dolph’s career destroyed after the racial slur accusation.

Fran & Margaret tried to get Gary fired on 2 different occasions:

* In November 2018, Dolphin found himself in hot water after he criticized the program’s recruiting efforts and made comments directed at Iowa guard Maishe Dailey that inadvertently made it to air during a commercial break.

“How do we not get anybody like that?” Dolphin said. “We just don’t -- year after year. Just get one. We get Maishe Dailey. Dribbles into a double team with his head down. God.”

* On Feb 21, 2019, Gary referred to Maryland’s Bruno Fernando as “King Kong” during the closing moments of the game. Hawkeye Sports Properties, the multimedia rights manager for Iowa’s athletic department, then announced that Dolphin would be suspended for the rest of the season.

I bet Beth put Fran on a very tight leash. I think that's why he had his hands in his pockets so much.

Gary put up with a lot. Beth doesn't put up with any BS.

Put me in the half that wanted him gone because he isn’t good at his job. The racial slur? Makes me chuckle, sin of omission rather than commission. Far overblown.
As far as the McCafferys and former players go…… heaven forbid someone support the current program. Connor will unfriend you. For someone who played the gritty tough guy on the court he is certainly soft off the court.

Beth Goetz joined Iowa athletics in September 2022 as the deputy director of athletics and chief operating officer. She later served as interim director of athletics starting in August 2023 before being named the permanent Director of Athletics in January 2024.

Personally, I think the UI President pushed Gary Barta into "retirement."

And look at the decisions Beth has made:

* Fired Brian Ferentz MID SEASON
* Hired Jan Jensen (some argue the jury is still out)
* Fired Fran
* Hired Ben

This kind of stuff almost only happens at a place like Iowa. Hold on to coaches forever no matter what offenses they commit or records they produce

Fran had 4 NCAA Tournament wins during his 15-season tenure (2010–2025). He led Iowa to 7 NCAA Tournament appearances but his teams went just 4-7 in the "Big Dance" and never advanced to the Sweet 16.

Ben has 3 NCAA Tournament wins and an Elite 8 appearance in his FIRST YEAR at IOWA.

Speaking of heading to the bank, Caitlin earned $16.1M in 2025 (mostly from endorsements, of course).
