At least somebody is optimistic about this season.

“'I have to live in the world where having high expectations this past year and losing four out of our last five games,' Rhule said. 'Not being able to finish seasons the way that we want. So, I’m unbelievably optimistic.'”

Matt Rhule states he is 'unbelievably optimistic' at Nebraska despite letdown season in 2025
2020 : lost 9 of last 11 games.
2021 : lost 9 of last 10 games
2022 : lost 4 of last 5 games before fired
2023 : lost last 4 games to finish 5-7
2024 : lost 5 of last 6 regular season games
2025 : lost 4 of last 5 including bowl game

Insanity : doing the same thing over again, but with more optimism this time, and expecting a different result.

Crazy considering Rhule preaches November is the most important month of the season.

It’s lazy coach speak
It will be more of the same every year until we are able to beat physical teams that have a dedicated rushing attack. You can’t have any real success in the BiG TeN if you can’t beat those type of teams, period.
Sadly, I think this is true. I hope, as I said above, that Rhule is correct to be optimistic. After all, and despite all of my bitching about Rhule, I am a rabid Husker fan. Nevertheless, the thing we have lacked for the past 10-12 years is a truly physical team that is really sound and tough in the trenches. We have new line coaches this year on both sides of the ball. Damn, I hope they are good. They better be.

Are we just gonna ignore the fact that this quote of his makes absolutely zero sense in any way, shape or form whatsoever? On a multitude of levels. We're all dumber from having read it.

What the hell does any of that even mean? That's seriously beyond preacher Rhule. That's the babblings of an idiot. Like a turtle on his back just word salad vomiting crap.

Textbook sign of someone who has no clue what he's doing. He's lost. He's out of lies that people will even remotely believe.

This dude is toast.

If that is an exact quote, you are right -it makes no sense.

Best I can tell, the literal translation would be something along the lines of...

I live in a world where we were optimistic last year, but still lost 4 of our last 5 games. Not just last year, but every year we are unable to finish seasons how we want. So, therefor, because of that fact, which I own, I am unbelievably optimistic for this year.

Seriously, what the f*ck? That's just spouting crap with no actual answers, accountability, reality, or give-a-sh*t whatsoever.

He is clueless...We hired Frost because of two reasons...

1. It made sense because of who he was
2. He had that amazing one season

We hired Rhule because of one sort of good season at Baylor.

Then for some reason the media thought he was some sort of "perfect fit" here. Trev fell for it and a lot of the fans ate it up because Rhule groomed them.

Can't really blame Trev or all the fans who bought it, though. Rhule did the same thing coming out of Baylor. He had NFL execs (some of the brightest minds in football) clamoring for his services as the next big up and coming coach. Got Carolina to overpay so much that the other owners were pissed off about it.

The hope from Trev and a lot of fans was that he still had "it" just that it didn't translate to the pro level. Obviously, there was never an "it" to begin with. Or, if there was, it's gone or doesn't translate to a blue blood level.

I do absolutely think Trev realized Rhule was a fraud and the jig was up which played heavily into his decision to leave for A&M, though. And nobody will ever convince me otherwise.

I won't say no one, because there's always someone, but seriously... almost no one is buying it this year. Callahan, Riley, Frost.... right now is the most uniformly negative that the Nebraska fanbase has ever been. Pretty sure if you see someone posting something positive on X or here... it's just an Iowa tweeker pulling his chud and looking for a reaction.

Yeah, it's palpable. I suspect it's due to one of the following, or both, for most people...
  1. Our patience has gotten shorter as we've learned not to get our hopes up from what we've been through with previous regimes.
  2. We can all see that Rhule is a used car salesman who continually pisses on our legs and tells us it's raining and we don't like being lied to.

I much prefer Bo or Cally who were just were outwardly disagreeable once things got bad, this pc/protect the brand(Rhule) method is really gross.

I think Rhule -- which happily rhymes with tool -- believes his own ballshite, which is genius or delusional, as the case may be.

But preachers gonna preach, no matter what damnation descends on the congregation.

The mistake is believing that message boards are an accurate representation of the majority of fans. We have a dozen or more fanatics posting repetitively on this board.

I want an optimistic coach. But "unbelievably" optimistic? Screams car salesman for a coach who's been remarkably average.

How can Saban always be cautiously optimistic with 7 rings and our guy is "unbelievably optimistic?" Someone explain how this is anything but more empty bluster?

Agreed. That is a very strange quote. He gives no reason why he is optimistic.

You would be optimistic too if you had a job where if you are fired, there is a 63 million golden ticket to be cashed if you are fired. I look at this situation as, you farted around for 3 years, now its time to get going. I do not want to hear about a hard schedule. You had a much easier schedule the past two years and now find your self squarely in Mike Riley territory. It is time to put up, or STFU. And the idiot AD that extended him needs to be shown the door. He got played like a fiddle on the extension.

Some people I’ve talked to are in fact optimistic about the portal pieces we added on offense including the O line coach. Aurich almost HAS to be better than Butler. So MAYBE there is some reason to be at least hopeful if not optimistic for improvement.

Could be. He left in March 2024. That was after Rhule’s first season with Sims/HH/Purdy that started 5-3 before losing 4 straight. Raiola had just arrived though, so there was hope and optimism at that point.

If Trev was wise enough to see that Rhule wasn’t going to cut it, then leaving quickly was a smart choice. Of course if Trev was that wise and that smart, I would have hoped he could have seen that before he hired Rhule.

The edited quote in the article is kinda butchered. The full quote is pretty meandering, but it's not as nonsensical as it seems in the article. He was talking about what he felt in 2024 when we beat Colorado and then beat Wisconsin and how those games gave him glimpses of optimism to build from, then went on to say:

“But I also have to live in the world of having high expectations this past year, and losing 4 of our last 5 games. And not being able to finish seasons the way that we want.

So, I’m unbelievably optimistic. When we bring recruits into this building, if they love football, it’s not built around recruiting. But if they walk in and they see our commitment to sports science, our commitment to recovery, our commitment to the training table, like if they love football and they come to this building, they’re gonna want to be here. So I’m unbelievably optimistic, yet also still really angry about how our season ended last year.”
