"The Division I Football Bowl Subdivisions Oversight Committee has adopted a proposal that would loosen the constraints on conferences needing one or more of its 5-7 teams to play in bowl games.

Under the proposal, voted on Thursday, if all teams with at least a 6-6 record have been selected, a conference can pick any team that has a minimum multiyear Academic Progress Rate score of 930 to fill its bowl commitments.

The committee’s action is not final until the Division I Cabinet reviews it in June.

Currently, if 5-7 teams need to be selected for a bowl, those teams become available in descending order of their multiyear Academic Progress Rate."

NCAA proposal would loosen protocol for conferences needing 5-7 teams to fill out bowl agreements

Maybe if the team turns out to be 5-7, which I think there is a great chance they do, Matt the Hat should just pass if offered a bowl game. Why would he want to add another loss to his resume? (In all seriousness don't most of you think it is pretty lame for any team to go to a bowl game if they are 5-7? I think a team should having a winning record)

It doesn’t happen a ton but it happens and with the expanded playoffs it might happen more because they need teams to fill the bowls

It will be a problem to fill bowls with so many player opt outs , some teams decide to to decline their invite.
Yes. So, a record of 5-7 would probably get Nebraska to a bowl game this year. That would make three bowl games in a row.

I imagine part of the reasoning was because it was such a mess to fill in the bowl slots.

For context, there were 80 bowl eligible teams to fill the 82 bowl slots. Kansas State, Iowa State, and Notre Dame all opted out, bringing the number down to 77 eligible teams. To begin the "back-fill", Missouri State and Delaware were selected as they were teams transitioning in - they already had 6+ wins, but were originally ineligible for being in their first year in the FBS. Now at 79/82 spots filled, three 5-7 teams had to be found. Many of the higher APR-ranked teams that had 5 wins either were not expecting the call or could not practically field their teams ridden with transfers and coaching changes, so the bowls had to go relatively far down the APR list to find teams available. Mississippi State, Rice, and Appalachian State ended up as the 5-7 teams chosen.

But keep in mind that all of this was happening at the same time. I believe KSU and ISU opted out slightly ahead of time, but Notre Dame's drama really made it a "messy situation"- in clean words. Meanwhile, it was unclear for a long time if a bowl was going to replace the old Bahamas Bowl, so we didn't know if we needed 80 or 82 teams until the XBox Bowl was created in a last minute situation.

I understand it was no concern to us since we had 7 wins, but it was surely a cluster-something for those in charge of selecting the teams for the bowls on that day. This rule makes it easier to adapt to this situation in the future.
