If y’all don’t think what he’s saying is true you’re loco. The stigma is huge when you get outside the bubble of little MS and they have no one to blame but themselves for appearing to hold on to the past.

I mean.. Ole Miss LITERALLY dresses their players as if they’re sending the University Greys to Gettysburg.

Unfortunately OM has a better brand than MSU outside of the state of Mississippi.

Its not something huge but when i say I'm a big mississippi state fan they say "Ole Miss?"

I'll admit, I rather enjoyed his antics in Oxford, but the whole fake dog/pet thing was just pitiful. I find his antics and press conferences entertaining, but I think he crashes and burns pretty hard....... and playing the racial thing is really kinda stupid

Lane Kiffin 6 months ago talking about the same place....the man is a psycopath.

"I went to Oxford & had this view. Then I have kids there and I got this view as a parent & how awesome of a community it is to raise your kids in.........Then you see your parents at the end & lose your parents, one kind of expected & the other one unexpected & see how the community is around that. I owe so much to Oxford & the people there. It's just been awesome."
Both things can be true..

Lane Kiffin: My experience in Oxford has been awesome and the people I’ve met here have been incredible to members of all races.

…also..

Lane Kiffin: I continually had to deal with stigma of Ole Miss while recruiting and I feel the symbology associated with the university is holding it back.

Now, is similar symbology in place at LSU? Why, sure it is… I mean, ain’t no real tigers running around the bayou, so where did the nickname come from? But it still isn’t as slap-you-in-the-face, burn-a-cross-in-your-yard blatant as OLE MISS REBELS dressed in confederate colors.

Insert where Ole Miss fans mention that the Fighting Tigers were a confederate infantry group from Louisiana.

Does that make it a good "brand" though? People know there is a school in Mississippi with the nickname "Ole Miss", but they dont know what school it is.

This is the reason I dont call them Ole Miss. Its nothing to do with the rivalry, I just think it causes confusion. Obviously, my personal nomenclature won't change anything, but it makes me happy.

Upsets my new neighbors, though, who are young UMiss grads

This is true. I AI-asized it.

  • The name began in 1861 with Maj. Chatham Roberdeau Wheat’s "Tiger Rifles," a company of volunteers—many of whom were foreign-born laborers—who wore colorful Zouave uniforms.
  • While initially referring to Wheat's specialized battalion, "Louisiana Tigers" came to describe all of Louisiana’s infantry troops fighting in the Army of Northern Virginia.
  • These troops played key roles in major battles including First Manassas (Bull Run), the Shenandoah Valley campaign, Antietam, and Gettysburg.
  • The LSU Fighting Tigers nickname (adopted in 1896) is directly inspired by these Civil War troops, particularly given that early Louisiana volunteer units used the nickname and that LSU began as a military school
  • These troops fed off the hearts and organs of young cancer patients and lepers colonists.

Don't be ridiculous. Their "stigma" sure isn't hurting their recruiting of black athletes in any sport or in bringing in out of state students.
I dont know if their history makes recruiting more difficult or not. But I think Lane is trying to make sure it does

He’s still gonna be the most popular coach in football next year.

Everything he says will be on SportsCenter. People are going to continue to eat it up just like they have for the last five or six years.
These two things do not mean the same thing. He will be on SportsCenter and people will be eating it up and talking about it, but he will not be the most popular coach. Iran is on the news every day and talked about constantly, but no one besides a few way left liberals are saying that Iran is their favorite country.

I can’t imagine the weight of being him right now. The vast majority of the public/fans, and not just Ole Miss fans, hate you. And thus they hate your new team.

You’re the second highest paid coach in the country, 3/4 of the rest of the top 5 have won a national championship. All the other ones in the top 10 except Drink at Missouri have won a playoff game.

You’ve got the most expensive roster in CFB. The expectations for you are so, so much higher for you in year one than any other coach in the country. If he goes 9-3 and they finish ranked #14th, miss the playoffs, your fanbase will consider that an abject failure.

I think he’s gonna crack.
LSU is where good coaches go to die.

Idk about that two borderline idiots won National Championships there.

But they probably have the quickest trigger on anyone in the country on firing coaches. Certainly quicker than Georgia, Alabama, Texas. If he doesn’t make the playoffs this year his seat will be already be warm and if by year 2 they don’t advance to at least the quarters it will be scorching, would have to make a legit semifinal run in year 3. No natty by year 4 he would be fired.

All it takes is one Ole Miss recruit to read this and believe it. Whether it's true or not, it's true now. Ole Miss is a little more racist and LSU is less racist. Lane's autism is geared towards controversy for sure. This can do nothing, but hurt Ole Miss.

This is a very real possibility. I just have a feeling that last year at Mississippi was his peak.
I told some LSU friends when they hired Curley Hallman to be aware that at Southern Miss he had the best QB in college football (some kid named Favre) and that can really make a coach look better than he is.......of course they pooh poohed me .The kid Lane had as QB last year at OM played completely out of his arse and made Lane look better than he is also.

Josh Pate did a “Most Hated Coaches” poll on Twitter/his showwhich is national and one of the biggest shows on YouTube.

It was overwhelmingly kiffin, something like 68% with 9 other coaches listed. No one else got more than 10%. 6 figures worth of votes.

Between the regular season and the postseason, that was the biggest CFB story. The whole country watched it. And people already hated Kiffin before he even got to OM.

This^ was written before he even made the decision to leave, and was simply flirting with the idea.
Everyone but OM hated Kiffin before last season. Now everyone but LSU hates him. I don’t think him leaving OM made anyone else (other than OM) hate him.

Exactly my point. The whole country hated him before this. Take Ole Miss and LSU out of it.

You don’t think the whole country hates him more now?

I would love for someone to tell me a coach that is more nationally hated right now. Kirby? Cignetti? Dabo? Ryan Day? Sark? Marcus Freeman? Lanning? Not a chance.

None of these guys leading top 15 programs are even remotely close to being as dislikable and hated as Kiffin.

Kiffin wasn't and isn't universally hated. He has a lot of fans around the country. Kiffin is a lightening rod both ways. I can't stand him, but that dates way back. My second team is USC.

Tell me an active coach that you think if you polled the country would have a higher dislike/like ratio than Kiffin. As I said Josh Pate already did this. Did a most hated coach poll, put pretty much the 10 most prominent coaches in the country in the poll, and Kiffin got 68% with no other coach getting more than 10%.

I’m genuinely curious who you think is more disliked around the country.

It is not at all stupid. Jackie made a living here doing it. We should do it more. We are the blackest school in the SEC and by a pretty significant margin.

That should be a selling point.

Ole Miss was the last school in the SEC to integrate their football team, and the guy that they named their stadium after retired rather than be the one to take on the unpopular task of integrating the team.

Everything he said about om, has already been said many many times through the decades. Nobody is mad at him for saying those things, they're mad because he's lying about why he left.
Hell, we have had many threads on this very site of how the term om originated and what the alternative racist options were (the masters, and not like the golf tourney).
There was an article on CNN several years ago about the name as well. They have weathered this storm because they know the term is their entire identity and edge. They have A Lot of people in media and print that also allow them avoid the racist microscope that others have been put under. This Lane Kiffin saga is amazing to watch, and I for one hope he continues to stir this pot.

Hate to burst your hate bubble, but black players coming from poor or bad situation would put on a confederate hat and wave the rebel flag in front of 60,000 fans every Saturday for the kind of money a lot of them are getting. Some zeros from the northeast, northern Illinois or California may say no to ole Miss and any other school in the middle of the old south, but not players and families from poor situations.

It’s no more racist and segregated than any other town in MS. As bad as you want it to be, it just isn’t. Lane pandering to the lowest common denominator hurts everyone involved and probably puts State in an unfortunate position because every dipshít that can’t figure the difference between State and OM will just assume either one is the racist environment that Lane claims “hindered” his recruiting efforts while he was the self anointed king of the portal.
