McBride is expected to be the starter, not N’Diaye — according to the latest episode of Zoom Action. This must come from a good source, as Zack G and Ramsey both acknowledged they were caught by surprise to find that out.

The idea is McBride has the higher floor.

Assuming this is true, thoughts?

I know some people on here really like N'Diaye because of the length, athleticism and "fit" but the guy is a 22-year old shot chucking 6'11 forward from Senegal that weighs 210 lbs. I'm very worried about N'diaye, especially first year, and McBride is undersized. Wish we would have pulled a rabbit out of a hat.

I think McBride is underrated; in his film he looks like a BG that knows how to score, meaning he's got more tools in his bag than just facing the rim and shooting. Also, he faces the rim and shoots better than BG.

I was hoping N’Diaye was so much better that you could pencil him in as starter, and we have a solid back up in McBride. This is a bit disappointing to hear.

Trying to find optimism wherever I can get it, but right now all I can see is a backcourt that can get buckets and not much else. This is an 8th place (or worse if our guards don’t really produce) SEC type roster unless we get a big addition.

I don’t believe there are expectations about the starting line up from anyone associated with the team. You have to mix in some common sense with what you read.

It’s been said before It doesn’t matter who starts which at times is debateable. Both shep and dilly should have been starting for example of which most of us agree. With this bunch I’m not sure it will really matter who starts and who comes off the bench. I’m settling in for a long uninspiring season. Going to enjoy summer and fall football first.

It’s going to be interesting to see. I seen McBride is ranked 206th in the portal. He had some good games when I looked on his game log but the competition wasn’t the best. I just wonder why he’s ranked where he is? It will depend on which player adapts the best to playing basketball in a tough SEC obviously.

I’m not that surprised if they start the season that way. Seems like some of the intl guys take some time to adapt. Hopefully N’Diaye lives up to his potential and claims the starting role as the season goes on. PF is probably our biggest positional question mark.

Main question we should be asking is do we (on paper/through footage) trust our 4’s this upcoming season more than we did last season with Mo and Jelavic?
I like McBride over both Mo&Jelly.

Mo didn't look good @ all in this system. Only when he played physically did he look like he did @Alabama.

Jelly is the reason why McBride is starting over NDye. As stated will need to to adjust to new system, get stronger 💪, and develop consistent improvement just to be ready by time SEC play starts.

We have to talk about something between now and November, don’t we?
No kidding. Those dudes always amuse me. Like you’re on a message board commenting on a basketball post in May. WTH you wanna discuss? 😂

My thoughts are, I don’t expect N’Diaye to be much or any better than Z or the euro from this year. He looks soft and weak in his highlights. So now we are saying a dude that’s not very athletic and is one yr removed from being a bit piece at Nevada is the starter. Man, idk. This fanbase can rationalize ANYTHING.

“One of the best backcourts in the nation” can’t shoot but are really good passers. One 3 is coming off a less than stellar season and the other one was 30-40 lbs too light to play last year. Our 4 had to drop to James Madison to find a level he could produce at. And the other is a complete unknown. Our 5 is supposedly one of the best returning bigs in the country, except he wasn’t very good the last 15 games or so. I’m just not sure how this is all going to work.

Popes first year I didn’t think we were good enough but thought Jaxson coming at least brought some relevance. Last year I KNEW it was a crap roster and thought the people that argued against it just had no clue what they were talking about. This roster is EASILY…as it stands now…the worst of the three, IMO. I know there are people on here that will argue it’s the best, but they’re also the same people that thought we had a Ferrari last season and JQ would be ready in November (in short, clueless).

Exactly. Anyone with half a clue about hoops would come to this conclusion.

I have a different take on N'Diaye. My guess is that getting stronger and further developing skills are not major parts of the equation for N’Diaye’s impact on UK. He’s not a gangly 17 yr. old. He’s a much more mature bodied 23 yr. old who is wiry-strong enough and not likely to add a whole lot more good weight – nor do I think he needs to in order to be an effective PF. In regard to skills, N’Diaye has a boatload of developed skills already. I think what he needs is playing within a system to take advantage of some of those skills efficiently and being in an environment where his impact on winning, not showcasing talent, is rewarded.

Basically, I think what is already there with N'Diaye just needs to be harnessed to fit what Pope wants from the position. If he can't be molded into that now, I don't think more weight/strength or skill development is going to be the answer.

McBride looked better to me in the videos I saw, but figured the competition was better overseas, so I didn't know who was best.

I know people are getting mad at me for saying we’re not very talented as a whole this coming season. I would love to be wrong about it because if I am wrong we are winning but I just don’t see these guys being able to win with the top teams in our out of conference and in conference schedule.
If you start looking at it through the lenses of homerism and "Pope is one of us, so we can't say he sucks" it makes sense. Anyone with any sense of objectivity can see, this is a disaster waiting to happen. And Pope can't recruit at the level needed to win at UK. But people start seeing the 1996 title and Pope signing balls and autographs. And it all gets convoluted. Kyjeff1 agrees. He got banned for his rants on Calipari, but he won't say anything about Pope because he's a former player. And because Calipari dissed some of the fanbase, he deserved to be called bad names appr. Idk, this is why you don't hire former players. Emotions get involved and it gets messy. Michigan won 8 games with Juwan Howard. Then won the title 2-3 years later. I guarantee you he had supporters going into that 8 win season too.

I remember Kyjeff didn’t like Calipari and now he is really getting aggravated with Pope criticisms. I don’t think what I’m saying is unfair, I just think theirs a low percentage chance a guy that struggles recruiting like Pope can make it at a program like UK.

Which is an objective take. Jeff can't look past that Pope played here.

Defense is a concern for the whole team. And under popes poor leadership, especially defensively, we might give up around 80/game. This is going to be popes worst defense which is a scary thought.
This is the query all the Pollyannas/Popettes can't answer.

Even when you assemble a functional team, it still has to be managed by Pope.

That's where the logic fails.
