What would you choose if you could go back and experience one thing in North America before European settlers arrived?

For me, I think it would be to walk through the vast forests of towering American chestnut trees that stretched from Maine to Mississippi before the Asian blight was introduced in the late 1800's. The written accounts are fascinating. Forests so clean you could see for hundreds of yards. Tree after tree with a 10 foot diameter. Mast crops every year that carpeted the ground with huge chestnuts.

You can still go experience the redwoods. Yosemite is still there. But the huge American chestnuts are just gone...

I don't know if it's at the top of my list without more thought, but I would definitely like to see parts of Mississippi when the old growth forests were still here before any clearing began.

You bunch of tree huggers.

I'd want to be around the Natchez area hanging with the Theachoel tribe upon the death of the Great Sun, so I could see his wives and all of his servants get sacrificed so they could continue their service to the Great Sun in the afterlife.

Trees are overrated.

Ride a horse across the Great Plains before the time of Indians would be incredible

ETA: I’d prefer this in a Jeep. Can I do that since it’s make believe?

This is an absolutely fascinating topic. The attempts to bring back the American version are underway, but it’s certainly one of the most underrated ecological disasters in American history.

The beauty of the Great Plains has always fascinated me. Sure, I love a mountain and huge forests too. But the Great Plains are so incredibly unique to North America. If you’ve never driven back roads through the Flint Hills of Kansas. It should be on the bucket list.

Native Americans are espoused to be conservationists, however, Boston was importing lumber during the Revolutionary War because all of the timber had been destroyed by the prior “native populations.” To see the original landscape and animals would be enlightening and likely much different than what our scholars in public schools are teaching.
