I've seen a massive amount of injuries to key players, a team that didn't like each other, a big man that quit on the team and left them hanging and I've seen a coach with flaws that are fixable and methods that need to be tossed in the trash.
But I've also seen a coach that won many David vs Goliath matchups where he was David.
Pope has a good offensive mind and he would crawl through fire to win #9. But it's up to him to make the changes that need to be made. If he refuses to change to fix his flaws, he gets what he deserves.
We will know all we need to know by December 1st.

Also his over all record says Cal is better. Pope will never even sniff the HOF. Ever.

Everyone on this board agrees that Pope screwed up the roster badly this year and his game prep, substitution patterns and press conferences were awful
He also stood there and did nothing while we got obliterated in several games. That aggravated me.
Honestly, I think he lost the team, there was an issue early on and the team was very fragile.
He also screwed up by having only 1 pg.
But he still won at Arkansas and Tennessee and he still made the NCAAT and won a game, even with the injuries and the broken roster. He also did that against a top 4 SOS.
But why do so many of you ignore his first year and only focus on year 2. Everyone was stoked after year 1, it was a bad finish, but the team was hobbled. He still made a sweet 16 and had a bunch of massive wins that he got through really good game management.
It's his first year performance that has me holding on, but even with all the good things, he had several things he needed to be better at. I'm hoping he fixes those issues in year 3.
His overall record is propped up by supreme talent.
Lets not forget the 2013 NIT, the 9-16 season, the losses at home to VMI, Richmond, UNCW and the losses in the NCAAT to Saint Peters and Oakland. He had far more talent than most of the teams he lost to, but we should never lose to mid majors, especially in Rupp and the NCAAT.
Give Pope the talent Cal has had, I think he would do pretty well.
But, recruiting is a massive part of coaching. I get that and that is where Pope is really failing.

There are some aspects where Pope is better.
Cal is massively better at recruiting and his carrer is 35 years older, so therefore, he is the better coach overall, but which one would you want in a last play of the game scenario with the game on the line?
Which one do you trust to get a bucket out of a timeout?
Which one do you trust to get a bucket off a baseline inbounds play?
I think Pope is better during the game, but Cal is a master at getting big talent and blending them.
Problem with Cal is, he runs 1 type of offense and it's very simple and he runs one style of defense. That stuff worked 15 years ago with supreme talent, but today's game is different and his dinosour aged fast balls aren't good enough to win titles.
Last thing, the 09-15 version of Cal would have worked hard to figure it out. That version of Cal was driven. Today's Cal is lazy and satisfied.
Yeah I agree with all that. Cal is better overall but Pope is better at some aspects. But....who cares? We wanted Cal gone cuz he was losing his mojo, right? So your argument is that Pope is just barely better than the current old washed-up version of Cal?

It's no secret we don't have a good history of getting along. I was upfront about that from the start. I tried to let bygones be bygones and leave you over in your own pit of sadness as long as you left me alone. However, regardless of how much I respected your space, you eventually came at me like you do everyone else (just like people such as @UKortho tried to warn me about). Even trying with maximum effort not to offend you still results in the same set of misery. I don't know why you are so angry at the world like you are -- I really hope you find happiness rather than whatever is going on with you. It's amazing how some in this world fly off the handle in a moment's notice when their bad behavior comes to light, even making awful and dishonest accusations to spin it. The worst I saw was a guy accuse a poster of making fun of his deceased relative. The issue here is, you think I'm a Pope fan. I'm not. Never should have been hired, but since Mitch decided to put us in this position, I'm just hoping Pope can figure out a way to get the job done.
I was patient witb Cal until it was obvious he didn't care as much about UK and I'm going to be patient with Pope until I've had enough.
He did things in year 1 that give me hope. That's it. He outcoached some damn good coaches, then lost to some bad coaches. That's fixable, but is he capable? That's what I need to see.
The recruiting and cheeseball stuff, is another topic. He HAS to flip the script on those two things. I hope he does.

He's just a jerk, straight up. I've tried to make amends and bury the hatchet with him several times and he'll seem cool, then I read him taking potshots at me the next day. He's just a worm.
And he always makes things personal. Any disagreement with him devolves into name-calling and attacking people's families and crap like that. And that's not cool.
I take shots at coaches and players and athletic directors because they're in the public eye, but you will never catch me making it personal with other posters on here. It ain't worth it.
