General soreness. Whatever happened there.
Sha handled that whole situation terribly is what happened. That coupled with message board stuff and my (inaccurate) general perception about KR absolutely clouded my vision as a fan.

Then I saw him in the best shape of his life, playing through injuries for a tough a$$, Houston-like St John’s team, for a task-master like Pitino, and I realized how wrong I was about all that.

It's difficult to get a read on this kid but the fact that he has international experience and is coming in as a 23-year old who was given an Exhibit 10 contract to play in the G-league is interesting. This game vs Canada is an impressive result. I searched for a video of the game but have not found it yet but the fact that he dominated the Canadian U23 team in this game is very promising. No one on either team scored more than 16 points but Mariano had 27, 10 & 5 Blocks.

Canada's team was filled with high D-1 players who averaged double-figures this year. Their frontcourt had Michael Nwoko (LSU), Elijah Mayi (Santa Clara), Enoch Boakye (Nova) and more with Aden Holloway, Xavian Lee and Vasean Allette in the backcourt. Brasil won 85-78 with Mariano taking over the game. You have to have some ability to take over a game against good competition.

From watching his highlights, he reminds me of a young Tyrese Samuel. 6'9" 220 pound Forward who has 3-pt range, runs the floor well, can handle the ball a bit and is good at driving to the rim when he has some space. Shows some agility and skill in the post but he looks like a pick and pop, pick and roll type who can also sit in the corner and hit an open 3. Is a decent weakside shotblocker, can't really evaluate his rebounding or overall defense.

Samuel was talented but was underwhelming his first 3 years at SH. He didn't become a good, reliable player until his Senior year under Sha. Sha played him at the 5 and forced him to play inside. Can Sha get Mariano to buy into using his size and agility to score more inside and not spend most of his time on the perimeter? If so, he might be a useful player. Pleased to see us dipping into the international pool and G-League pool.
Found his highlights from the game against Canada where he had 27, 10 & 5 blocks. Scored in a variety of ways. Pick and Pop, Straight-line drive to the hoop, Midrange jumpers, backing down smaller defenders in the post and running the floor in transition. And was an impact defender in this game with blocks, deflections and rebounds.

Maybe we finally hit on one of these obscure players. The skills in those highlight videos are better than I was expecting. Who knows if that backdown move where he spins around the defender to score holds up against teams like St. John’s, Providence, or Connecticut.

Nice find. Skillset looks pretty great for our budget.

It is going to be a real interesting roster and the upcoming season will be equally interesting. This will be the new norm.

I did a search on "Nathan vs Georgetown"...

  • Nathan Mariano (11) and Lucas Atauri (10) rounded out those in double figures.
  • Mariano led Brazil on the glass, pulling down seven rebound

So he didn't have skills against Canada, just results?
No, I am saying that because he played better against Canada than Georgetown does not mean his skills and athleticism have left him. There could be a variety of explanations: he could not compete against Georgetown level, or he had a bad day, or he did not shoot well, or it was a bad match up, or he never touched the ball where he could operate or his girlfriend broke up with him.

If you are trying to say he does not have the skills to compete at the Big East level, then that is a different opinion but not what you said.

He looks athletic and fairly skilled from the video. As a fan, I hope it translates.

I have no idea what he is and nobody can really say if he’s good or bad.
