Neil Diamond a big omission; lots of country stars don’t write their own songs. George Strait has written a few but Dean Dillon wrote the bulk of his hits.
Didn’t know that about George strait. Not a big country guy but thinking there is more than just dolly and Willie for songwriter singers.

One person interviewed said he was too 'schmaltzy' but not in a bad way; just that some thought others were better at it (noting I do not see a 'schmaltzy' writer on this list better than Billy Joel...).
Billy Joel too schmaltzy? Not even close.

Neil Young is Canadian by birth; but does have American citizenship. So, maybe it was limited to 'American born' songwriters?
Ahhhh that makes sense because I didn’t see anyone from England…Paul McCartney, or Mick, Peter Gabriel.

"Schmaltzy?" Captain Jack and Miami 2017 are "schmaltzy?" Goodnight Saigon is schmaltzy?

His omission is especially surprising given the NYT critics weighing in on this - either they didn't have much pull, or commute from Jersey, hence the inclusion of Springsteen.

I'm sure Joel is laughing all the way to the bank.
Yea that was a silly thing to say.

Unfortunately for real Country you have to include those that have passed. The current crop of country is just POP with a twang. 🤷‍♂️JMO

I think Dylan wins by 4 lengths, Springsteen to Show and Simon to Place.

(sorry, still in the Kentucky Derby mindset).
Everybody I love loves Dylan, so I certainly wouldn’t argue that. But I can’t imagine Dylan putting Rosalita or Jungleland together. Lyrically, sure. But not musically.

Billy Joel has some great songs. He also has some schmaltzy garbage. I don’t think it’s fair to judge him on his schmaltzy garbage alone though.

Joel has some great songs. But he also has a load of schmaltzy crap. I don’t think it’s fair to judge him only on his schmaltzy crap though.

So they put the top five of these artists. Joel’s top 5 to start are iconic classics! But then again, the met gala party is a thing. Hunger games party at the capital.

Watch Billy Joel - who should be on this list - make Maher look like an even bigger idiot than he is wrt Jimmy Webb:

I have to say. I'm not necessarily a Bruce fan, but I had to play Rosalita last year to play with a cover band and it is a masterfully written song, musically. There are 6 or 7 different parts and they all flow together seamlessly. He must have spent a lot of time writing that. Born to Run is so overplayed, but also fantastic songwriting (we did that one too).

I agree with most about Billy Joel, his lyrics are well thought out.
My list - Paul Simon.
Billy Joel
Holland - Dozier - Holland
Smokey Robinson
and I'm partial to Steely Dan.

Bob Dylan if someone else sings his song.
Bruce nope,

Someone on this list wrote:

My p*ssy tastes like Pepsi cola
My eyes are wide like cherry pies
I got sweet taste for men who are older
It's always been so, it's no surprise
Hard to get “classier” than that, huh?

Cite some of his schmaltzy garbage for us.

Meh, I’m not going down this path. It’s all subjective. If you like it, listen to the hell out of it. I don’t like a lot of his stuff, but some of it is great.

Okay I agree with Uptown Girl. Anything else?
Well i absolutely hate For the Longest time and while not bad I love you just the way you are ranks pretty high on the schmalz meter.
But like I said I like a lot of his stuff and everyone, except for some punk bands, and death metal, have some schmaltz in them🤷‍♂️

That means you can’t name any.
I don’t get this with music. Why is it important to you that I have the same opinion as you? I’m not going down that path for this reason. If I gave you songs, then you would try to argue that my opinion is wrong and I honestly don’t care enough about Billy Joel to get into a pissing contest about him.
Like I said, if you like him listen to the hell out of his stuff.
