I've started this twice, but never made it through it. Tip o' the cap, to you sir.
It was tough. Started, quit, started again, quit again, and finally finished it. Let’s see Peter Jackson make a movie out of that one.

Look, I'm old.....This meme thread is gold, but I just don't get these Hobbit references......

So, does this just mean there are alot of dungeon and dragons goobers on here, or is this a movie series I need to watch

As in, is it good, and has some good humor, or what is the deal
The movies are a phenomenon of the 2000s (think Star Wars for Gen X). The books are a phenomenon of the 50s and 60s (Think Led Zeppelin or Boomers as kids). I had literally never heard of it until I saw kids reading them in the early 2000s. Says more about me that it.

Amazing that this thread was started while we were watching the first Hobbit movie on Max. We began the Hobbit trilogy Monday and will go through all 6. Although the Hobbit trilogy is not as enjoyable as The Ring trilogy it provides a lot of background information. LOTR starts with Bilbo's party and the passing of the ring to Frodo. The Hobbit details how he acquires the ring and his experiences with it. It also provides background info on the Dwarfs, Elves, Orcs, the 5 wizards, and why the Dwarfs hate the Elves. The Hobbit: an unexpected journey is the best of the three in my opinion.

They should have just filmed the Thrawn Trilogy as episodes 7-9 back in the 90s. Everyone would have loved it.
I actually googled why this didn't happen because those are literally the only star wars books I have read and I remember them being great (looking back, I have no clue why I never tried to find another Timothy Zahn book or star wars book to read), but supposedly there was a lot of concern about recasting the main characters and the criticism that would inevitably draw (which I think is a very reasonable concern) and not wanting to be constrained creatively (which certainly looks like a garbage concern to have in hindsight; somebody or something to constrain Kathleen kennedy is exactly what they needed). I also came across something noting that a big reason Disney wanted Star Wars was that they had so much IP aimed at girls and virtually nothing that was aimed at boys. Which makes their decision to let Kathleen Kennedy take a basically antagonistic stance towards its fan base even more unforgiveable from a stockholder perspective. Why the 17 would you have all that princess related IP and decide that what you really needed to do was take a golden goose with huge potential for attracting young male fans (with an already existing huge older male fanbase) and attempt to feminize it with the Force Is Female BS.

I don’t know if was just my age at the time but Tolkien and the whole fantasy genre really seemed to explode late 70’s early 80’s timeframe. It could just be a generational thing.

I read the whole series as a kid during that time frame. An aunt introduced me to it.

The Hobbit trilogy is terrible. Just a cash-grab. As others have said, the tone of the Hobbit is very different from the LOTR books. They made "Lord of the Rings: The Hobbit: More Everything!"
