What do you see as the biggest obstacles to making the jump from coaching at NGU to coaching at USC?maybe bring him on staff as an assistant for whoever the next real coach is. Programs that have played for and won national titles should not be a training wheels job for coaches that are not experienced with running a major program.
As I've stated in other threads, it's obvious recruiting has been lacking and I think this is where Powell will make a huge difference. What do you see as the biggest obstacles to making the jump from coaching at NGU to coaching at USC?
I don't see the coaching aspect being all that different.
High schoolers do love playing for a coach who has been in the pros. Good selling point for parents as well.As I've stated in other threads, it's obvious recruiting has been lacking and I think this is where Powell will make a huge difference.
If he can recruit to NGU, I think he can bring in the talent at Carolina we've been lacking since our championship days.
He knows how to win and he can sell it along with his Carolina and MLB story.
At least, unlike Holbrook, Powell has head coaching experience.maybe bring him on staff as an assistant for whoever the next real coach is. Programs that have played for and won national titles should not be a training wheels job for coaches that are not experienced with running a major program.
I am glad to see many posters come to this understanding. Such was not the case when he left to become HC at CoC.I cant fault Tanner too much for the Holbrook hire, I think at the time that was the obvious move to everyone.
I think recruiting is a different animal. I cant say with any certainty that he cant do the job, I just think its an unknown and with the string of dogshit head coach hires we've had here, getting the next one right is extremely important to try and reclaim national relevance. I think the guy we need right now who does more with less and knows the state of SC is the guy down at Coastal Carolina. Make him say no and if he does I think we should go grab McDonnell out of Louisville. He does not get the fan support he deserves up there and the dude can flat out coach. What do you see as the biggest obstacles to making the jump from coaching at NGU to coaching at USC?

It was a no-brainerI cant fault Tanner too much for the Holbrook hire, I think at the time that was the obvious move to everyone.
I think there was a lot of bad blood on his side about how it went down. He thought he should have gotten another year and looking back at who we replaced him with, he was probably right. Hindsight being 20/20, I think at the time Tanner probably thought he could poach Sully out of Florida who ended up leveraging SC's interest into major financial support improvements to the UF baseball program and facilities. And we ended up with Mark Kingston.I am glad to see many posters come to this understanding. Such was not the case when he left to become HC at CoC.
The game with CoC earlier this season was the Cougars' first visit to Founders Park since Holbrook became HC. It's good that time appears to have healed that wound.
NIL / recruiting is by far #1. Public appearances, fundraising would also be near the top. What do you see as the biggest obstacles to making the jump from coaching at NGU to coaching at USC?

His time at CoC is likely coming to an end in the next year or two if he doesn't turn things around. I know several players on his team. They are not happy with coach. Their baseball program is a rudderless ship.I am glad to see many posters come to this understanding. Such was not the case when he left to become HC at CoC.

Since 2000, SC has made the tournament every year but 5, so it isn't like we haven't been. The CWS is another matter, haven't been since 2012, today's HS seniors were in PreK, so recruits have no knowledge of any sort of "rich history". Our last conference championship was in 2011. Again, ancient history to today's recruits. As to CWS appearances being made "fairly regularly", we have been 11 times in our history (we started playing baseball in 1895, the CWS has been played since 1947).I think there was a lot of bad blood on his side about how it went down. I dont think Holbrook is a bad coach, he was just not able to replicate the success tanner had, even during Tanners leanest years (other than the first year or two) he made the post season every season and I think that is the basement for this program. We should be in the tournament every year, we should be in the supers frequently, and we should be in Omaha fairly regularly.
To be fair, a "rutter" was a written book of sailing instructions used before navigational charts existed. So, a ship could conceivably be "rutterless".And it doesn't have a rudder, either.

He was a difference-maker in the championship runs. His hiring was not questionable at the time.I cant fault Tanner too much for the Holbrook hire, I think at the time that was the obvious move to everyone.
Seriously? As much as it pains me to say, the baseball program went from one of the premier , if not the premier program in the country,to practically irrelevant. This program is a shell of what it was, and it’s not like it has just been a down year.maybe bring him on staff as an assistant for whoever the next real coach is. Programs that have played for and won national titles should not be a training wheels job for coaches that are not experienced with running a major program.
I'm okay with it. I'm not sure it even makes a crap anymore anyway.Seriously? Baseball is baseball. Scholarships are sparse, so it’s not like you can’t get quality players. I am on board with the hire if he wants it. Again, baseball is baseball. 9/10 you are not in a situation where you flat out-athlete someone in baseball like football.
How different is the D-II landscape from D-I?Since 2000, SC has made the tournament every year but 5, so it isn't like we haven't been. The college baseball world has changed a lot since Tanner left as coach. NIL, increased scholarship numbers, more teams with baseball traditions, etc. all combine to make taking over a college baseball program and creating instant success much more difficult. If Powell is having success at NGU, he must be able to navigate the new landscape pretty well.
It's a valid question. He's coaching at a place that publicly aligns with his religious beliefs. That's more important to some guys than money. He may just be happy and content where he is.My thinking is does LP want the job? Everyone seems to assume he wants it.
If you read the posts on here much, you will know that there are quite a few who think every coach everywhere wants any job that comes open at South Carolina. My thinking is does LP want the job? Everyone seems to assume he wants it.
I'm thinking it is a pretty stark difference in facilities. Recruiting would be different too, totally different players being sought. I'm not sure the actual coaching is that much different. Baseball is baseball. How different is the D-II landscape from D-I?
You don't know? The money, the competition, the recruiting.. the coaching is different because the talent level is different. Players are bigger, stronger and faster, capable of more things at the D I level than they are at the D II level. That means your players should be better, but the opposing players are as well. In baseball, I imagine the difference is a bit less than in other sports, but pitching and the ability to find hitters who can hit or be trained to hit those pitchers is probably the biggest gap at that level. How different is the D-II landscape from D-I?
I just don't see Landon leaving NGU. Nor Schnall CCU.You don't know? The money, the competition, the recruiting.. the coaching is different because the talent level is different. Landon will leave NGU for a $500k+ raise. It may not be here, but he will certainly leave.I just don't see Landon leaving NGU. Nor Schnall CCU.
