He plays hard, he has a lot of heart, a sparkplug and maybe a great guy in the locker room. He was grabbing rebounds and doing everything in that last 3 minutes.

I know we have Coop Koch, Sage and a few others coming back. I just hope Folgeuris (sp?) wont be a key missing link next year.

Very excited about the new PG and the Big Big man along with a couple of frosh

They finally released the full game on YouTube a a few weeks ago. Happy to announce I’ve watched that game in person, and then another 10 times.

It did sting to watch Alvaro tear it up, but then again there were too many games he disappeared. He needed the right matchup to get going, and Illinois + Purdue + several others, weren’t one of them.

It's a shame Alvaro moved on, but it's probably best for both parties. No one can ever take away what the big man did vs. Florida and Nebraska, all-time Iowa moments. We'll be watching them for decades. But as most recognize, his inconsistency was maddening. As brilliant as he was vs. Nebraska and Florida, he was MIA vs. Illinois, and you just can't have that. And it wasn't just Illinois, it was like that all season long. Alvaro would have a great game and you'd think okay, the kid has figured it out. And the next game he'd disappear. Consistency is one of the most valuable assets in any aspect of life, and certainly in sports.

I hope Alvaro has a great year at Louisville, but Iowa has many outstanding options to replace him, options that project to provide the consistency Alvaro just never did.

i do somewhat agree with you but at the same time i am not sure that a more consistent performer would've helped iowa win any of those games (like vs. IL) in which alvaro disappeared while also helping win the games (NE, FL) in which alvaro was a hero. really wish we coulda kept him but it is what it is.

Alvaro had an awful turnover against Illinois that really swayed the momentum at the time. I believe he just got a steal and then instead of passing to a guard, started to hesitantly dribble and then got the ball stolen from behind and then Illinois makes a shot... Ben was livid and yanked him, I don't know if he played much after that sequence.

I agree with this. I also wonder how much NIL $$ was offered by both Iowa and LVille.

This is the new dynamic of college sports and it appears (to me at least) that BMcC won't be held hostage by NIL. On to the next portal transfer and we'll see what happens.

So you wish Alvaro would stay at Iowa - "If wishes were horses, beggars would ride."

Yep. Hard to know. I think he probably wanted to stay but the staff said this is the number and his agent said here is a much higher number.

I like Big Al as a person, but as a player he was just too inconsistent. Anytime he felt any resistance, it was like he would wilt. He would also spend time complaining to the refs if he felt he was fouled.

I remember this. It just didn’t seem he was in that game. But even if he had a good game, I don’t know if we could have beaten Illinois.

part of that was Alvaro, but part of it was him having to play the 5 when he wants to play and really is a stretch 4.

while i would have liked to see him return, I'm equally excited to see what we can do with a true 5 as well as what the young hybrids/wings (Koch, Thompson, Harris, Sage, and Coon) can do.

I agree, and if I remember right, he played the 4 for Spain during Eurobasket. Spain had their center position covered.

Yeah I get it regarding Alvaro, but for his inconsistency and what he apparently was going to cost to keep, I'm just gonna wish him well and turn the page. Next man in. Coleman and McKeever are good consolation prizes.

I liked Alvaro a lot. But as mentioned sometimes he got a little too Euro with palms up and complaining. He was brought in to be #2 guy to Stirtz and just not consistent enough and met the expectations he sought.

Like pro sports you see the successful franchises not get attached sentimentally and not afraid to get rid of a guy. or resign that popular player who is on the downslope or seeking that next big contract that is not in the best interest of the team to pay him. Belicheck and patriots perfect example. Or it’s like moneyball and baseball. Mid level teams trade guys before that huge payday for prospects. Not saying Iowa is the As or Rays but we aren’t the dodgers or Yankees that can afford to spend $ like a drunken sailor . Iowa saw this with Alvaro and knew he wasn’t worth asking price and $ better spent on true C and backcourt depth.

Or McCollum unlocked his potential in the P4 with a year of development and now we get to watch Louisville reap the benefits. We’ll find out I guess.

On the bright side, he's the only one we're talking about. It seems like most teams lost a handful of guys.
