1957 was a good year. A boatload of attaboys going your way for your courage and persistence. It couldn’t have been easy, all respect.
It wasn't but then I was hired by an investment company as their Controller. Great 401k plan. 50% match no limit. Do the math on 7 years with me maxing out on it. Plus they will watch my portfolio with no fees forever. Been working 3 days a week for the past 3 years Tuesday thru Thursday 6:30 to 2:30. Beat rush hour going in and coming home.

I’ve never rage quit, but I once “deep depression and burnout quit” nearly a quarter century ago. Had to do it really, I had reached a point where I was mentally frozen and couldn’t function.

Things were rough for the better part of a year after that, but it ultimately worked out for the best. Moved back to PA and the area where I grew up. Living near family again, my son who was very young at the time got to be around and has memories of both his grandfathers, who each ended up passing away within a few years after that. He wouldn’t have those memories if we hadn’t moved back.

And I landed a subcontracting gig that a few years later led to hiring on directly and I’m now in my 20th year of that job — one where I’ve been happy with 95% or more of what it has entailed. Not too shabby.

Never rage quit but probably in the process of quiet quitting. Just turned 60 and have been doing software development my whole career. The wife and I will be relocating to Raleigh NC next month, to be near our daughter, and my company requires employees to be in-office 3 days a week. Not sure how they'll handle it but I'll try to hang on as long as I can because IT hiring is in the dumper right now. My wife fortunately can work remotely from anywhere with her job.

We have a place in the Avalon subdivision up 211 past the Lowes Foods, in Bolivia. Really like Southport. Kids love eating at the frying pan and watching all the water traffic.
I know where that is. Growing like crazy up that way but you can pretty much say that about the whole south eastern part of NC. We’ve been here a little over 3 years and love it so far.

Anyone retire due to RMD? Why work if 50% of your income or more goes to the feds for taxes
Well, Sluggo, I'm certainly not in the 37% tax bracket, but receiving additional income from SS did place me in the 28% fed bracket for a while.

11- years ago, in 2015, Kar & I filed for Social Security (FRA @66). My wife owned a custom window treatments business but shut it down about 25-yrs ago when the joints her hands became too inflamed from the tedious hand working on the custom drapes, so we were essentially a one-income earner since 2001.

I was working full time receiving SS checks, small pension from the Operating Engineers Local 542, and a few taxable company benefits such as bonuses and usually 10-15 unused vacation days, placed me in the 28% fed tax bracket. I requested to reschedule my work week to 4-days, with an understanding I would work whatever time needed to complete rush projects for various clients.

In 2019, I was asked by the owner of the engineering company if I wished to work a three-day work schedule,
with the same prior benefits. I welcomed the opportunity, especially in the few months ahead I would be required to make the RMD @ age 70-1/2 which would be added to my income.
This year marks the 40th year I have been with this firm.

2015 Fed tax bracket:
28%Single Filers
$90,750 to $189,300
Married Joint Filers
$151,200 to $230,450
Head of Household Filers
$129,600 to $209,850
2019 Fed taxes
Over $168,400 but not over $321,450$28,765 plus 24% of the excess over $168,400
2025 Fed bracket
22%$96,951 on taxable income fromup to . . .$206,700

Yeah, Brunswick County has been one of the fastest growing counties in the country for the last 5+ years. From Southport all the way down to Sunset Beach is pretty amazing. The beaches are great, and you can find quiet ones and busy ones all the way along there. We love it down there.

Well on one hand I m lucky. I’ve been making good money but I’d be in the next bracket above the 22% . but if I don’t work n just live on my RMD and SS would be around 120k per yr n my tax burden would be a lot less. And I can do that. Just feel guilty not working

Although I was eligible for Medicare 12-yrs ago, I'm still covered through my firm.
One of the issues that I believe Ed missed in his video is.......MAKE SURE you include in your plan out of state medical emergency.

Just curious, for those who have retired, how old were you when you retired?
Applied for Social Security in 2015 @ age 66 (FRA).

The maximum SS received in 2015 at the time-FRA- was $2,660 per month, $32,000+/- per year.

The maximum SS received in 2026 at-FRA- is $4,200 per month, $50,400 per year.

Not sure I will fully retire. Most data now shows that to live a long active life you need a reason to get out of bed everyday. I can't sit around and stare at the walls. I need things to do. I will always work of some kind, as I get older probably at a surf shop or bike store. Even if it’s a walmart greeter. I like feeling productive and making a difference. Lots of data showing you retire and plunk yourself on a couch you are gone within 5-8 years. Brain and body go to mush.

Does visiting this site ward off dementia and the like or hasten it?

I'd say I'm 10-13 years away but am checked out. Just do not care. Driving into DC today was absolutely brutal due to construction on every part of my commute and dozens of road closures due to the King's visit. I don't dislike my job - I love it to be honest. But, do not love it more than the alternative, which is doing what I want when I want. The DC bubble is intense too and it's depressing being around extremely rich people whose contribution to society is making money for more extremely rich people.

Not sure if you'd regret it in a few weeks or months but it would feel amazing.

I checked out in Northern VA 2 years ago and never looked back. Now I’m a starter at a golf course and work about 16 hours a week. Cant beat it.

Aren’t /weren’t you and @laKavosiey-st lion best friends from PSU?

A wedding seems to be a good opportunity for you two to settle any outstanding differences
Never thought about that. I would doubt that’s on the horizon.

I thought we were talking about quitting and retirement so I wasn’t understanding your comment. Thanks for the clarification.

So as with most things in life, it comes back to the individual. To each his own.
I don’t think that we can properly advise others as to how to live their life. Everyone has different interests and needs.
Personally, I had a few jobs after college, non of which I enjoyed. For me it was a mere necessity as a means to provide for my family.
I feel fortunate to have worked in an era and for corporations that recognized benefits such as profit sharing, pensions, and health care as a thing.
After the kids moved out, I worked ‘till becoming eligible for company pension. As my wife led a life of mother/housewife/volunteer, she was all-in for the opportunity for more freedom, and thus was not opposed to me leaving the workplace.
Having retired at 56, I can honestly say that the last 22 years have been some of the best in my life, and that the workplace was getting in the way of what I was really meant to do.

My same thoughts about the wedding concerning the invite of Harry, I also thought they were close friends.
Maybe it was the other dude, the Jets fan, The Rick would have a dozen beers sitting outside the house on lawn chairs.

Harry, are you sure you're not in "bed" with IaKav? 🤔
Certainly not in bed 😆 but yes we were close friends and roommates at PSU.

@laKavosiey-st lion

You need to let whatever recent differences you have with Harry be like water flowing under a bridge. Just forgive and forget without acknowledging any past differences. It’s okay to be different or disagree on certain issues.

This wedding should not only be a unification of your son with his soul mate, it should also serve as an opportunity for reunification of your long friendship with Harry.

Life is too short to be petty.
