Georgia is still #19 & they should be a national seed regardless of RPI

USM won’t be a national seed regardless. And neither will Georgia unless they really get that RPI up.

If you mean top 16 (what the NCAA now labels "national seed"), I agree. If you use the old definition of top 8 only, then no I don't think Georgia's RPI of 19 gets them into the top 8. Maybe like #10.

Of course sometimes the selection committee just makes up whatever they want, so it's still possible.

State has its destiny in its own hands.

win 5 of the last 7 SEC games, and only Texas can end up between State and UGA.

Texas closes with the easiest schedule: At Tennessee and home to Missouri. Alabama has to play Ole Miss. A&M has At Ole Miss and home to State. Auburn has State and UGA.

so if State can go 4-3 in last 7 SEC, likely locks up 3rd seed in Hoover and a Top 8 seed.

A couple things:
Beginning this year, the committee is going to seed the top 32 teams (all the 1 & 2 seeds). When people use the term "National Seed", they're almost always referring to the Top 8 seeds. Finally, Georgia is going to win 20+ league games in the toughest conference in America and win the league by multiple games. They will 1000% get a Top 8 seed. It won't even be a debate.

This is not difficult to understand - RPI be damned Georgia is going to win the SEC. Georgia has 17 wins (17-6) with 1 game left against Missouri , 3 vs. LSU, & 3 at Auburn. They are going to win 22-23 Texas has 14 wins today & even if they win out, they are at 21. Georgia will be a top 8 seed.

Georgia will win regular season title. But the Sec overall is as good as I remember and I go back to the early 70's with baseball, LOL.

Big game 3 today, we gotta swing the bats today, I see a higher scoring game today. I see the advantage Texas has been their defense but pretty evenly match team overall.

The RPI #s for 7-10 are extremely close
#7 USM - .6088
#8 Florida State - .6084
#9 MSU - .6084
#10 USC - .6073

It looks like they broke the 8th place FSU/MSU tie with SOS. There were probably a couple of games that ended late last night including opponents/ opponents of opponents of some combination of USM, MSU, & FSU that very slightly impacted the RPI.

Yeah I mean it's clear RPI is about the only thing the committee really looks at. Georgia played a weak OOC schedule and lost some of those games. It's hurting them now.

Winning a conference is independent of RPI. It'll likely work out for them either way but I could certainly see a situation where Georgia wins the SEC by a game or so and is really feeling heat about being a national seed. So many people just have this old school 'this is the way it happens' mindset but things have changed.

This is the part where someone wishing to make a point about our scheduling would make remarks about bringing in 3 early season opponents for 9 games knowing those teams would be Q4 and then opting to play 3 SWAC games.

I agree with you. I think historical assumptions might not hold true going forward. The growth of the super conference Is a big difference now too. The schedules are now increasingly unbalanced. Georgia got South Carolina, LSU, and Missouri this year, putting them at a significant schedule advantage vs someone who only got 2, or even 1 of those teams. It adds a notch to their resume, but I don’t think it would move them all the way from a 19 RPI up to a Top 8 national seed. I think they’d have to be sitting at a Top 12-14 RPI for that to move the needle over into a Top 8 seed.

We have 7 games left versus top 10 teams. We're going to end up with a top 10 SOS in the nation (currently 15th). Although I do agree 3 SWAC games is too much, complaining about one of the 10 toughest schedules in the country is a little dramatic.

Since seeding began in 1999, no regular season SEC Champion has ever failed to get a top 8 seed. Georgia, ranked in the top 5 of the polls, won't fail to get one either assuming the win the conference.

usm kills me. No way are they top 10 in the country; I guess them getting out of the gate fast when a bunch of teams they beat were trying to figure things out has played to their advantage though. They haven’t been all that great since about week 4 and even their “fans” have started to lose interest to a degree. I was surprised at the empty seats they had yesterday.

Can you give an example where that team’s RPI was 19 or worse? I don’t think it exists. And it certainly doesn’t exist in a 16-team SEC. We are in new territory and it will be interesting to see how it’s treated this year if all this holds as it is.

If so, they should probably get a Top 8 seed. But they probably shouldn’t be the highest seeded SEC team, or maybe even the 2nd highest. Their schedule is as soft as it gets for an SEC squad. They drew Mizzou, South Carolina, LSU, and Tennessee. 3 of those 4 won’t even make the NCAA field, and Tennessee is 50/50 at best to make it. Arkansas / UF are also nothing to write home about, and they went 3-3 against those 2.

Georgia's 10-5 against the SEC teams on their schedule that are sure tourney teams. 7-2 on the road at us, Ole Miss and TAMU.

They've got a few blemishes against weaker teams and an easier schedule than most SEC teams, but they've clearly proven themselves deserving of a Top 8. 17 the RPI sometimes and use your brain and eyes.

I highly doubt 2008 Miami (#1 national seed and 47-8) had an RPI in the teens

I don't believe most of this data. In just pulling 2008 data, Florida State and Miami both look like they had Top 5 RPI's. The UC Irvine datapoint looks like it could be valid. But sometimes it's hard to know if the RPI data is what it was at the Selction Show, or if it kept computing as the postseason played out. But even if that one is legit, the committee has sometimes given some RPI leeway to the West Coast due to some inherent disadvantages they have.

But I still contend there is zero historical preference in the "National Seed" era of an SEC or ACC champion with an RPI of 19 or higher being given a national seed. It's uncharted territory and it will be interesting to see how its treated. If the season ended today with their RPI at 19, I think they would be seeded 9th or 10th overall. The eye test says they are a national seed. But you rarely see the commitee deviate THAT far off of RPI (An 11 slot jump) for a national seed or host site.

FWIW, I did find a writeup from May 10th, 2017 with LSU listed as #17 RPI. That was two weeks before seasons end.

They went on a pretty epic run, winning their last 6 SEC games and then the tournament. So, ended up co champs and tourney champs. They got the #4 overall seed.

Won the regional and super (over us again, 5 losses to them in a few weeks).

Lost to Florida in the championship series in Omaha.

Doubt they were a low RPI by selection time with that finish.

It has its place but you have to verify if you’re researching. It’s great for compiling data or organizing. I do use it a lot working on equipment because it can find the fault codes from tractors and combines and tell you where to look for repair.

That’s most likely because LSU played well this weekend. Mississippi Southern is their alma mater. LSU is their team.

That makes sense. I could see it being valuable in applications like that.

I guess I'm surprised it's not better at basic internet research. There are lots of things I could probably track down if I had unlimited time and access to data. I kinda thought it would be really good at serving that function, but it's just not. And it is so confident of it's wrong answers.

It was a net positive week for us overall. We went 2-2 and moved up in the RPI while others around us had rough weeks. Oregon State lost a couple of bad games. Coastal took a really bad loss. Nebraska got swept by a bad Ohio State team. Ole Miss had a 1-3 week.

If they seeded it today, we’d probably be somewhere in the 9 to 11 seed range. Safely a host barring a total collapse the last two weeks, but need at least one more series win for a Top 8 seed.
