Game 1: Thursday at 7pm on ACC Network.

A series win over WF would be great, and a sweep would be HUGE…

I don’t think many fans know right now that the ACC changed the format of the ACC tournament this year. All 16 teams go to the tournament, and it’s now single elimination. The top 4 teams get double byes and only have to win 3 games in a row to win the ACC’s automatic bid. Seeds 5-8 would have to win 4 in a row, and seeds 9-16 would have to win 5.

The Cards are 10-11 right now and are in a 4-way tie for 7th with Pitt, NC State and Stanford. Fourth place is Miami and FSU at 12-9. With a series sweep or even a series win at Wake Forest and the following series at Miami, UofL has a very legitimate chance to claim one of the top four seeds.

Getting one of those top 4 seeds would make UofL a legitimate contender to win the ACC’s automatic bid to the NCAAT.

Wake with a fast start - 2 runs in each of the first two innings. Danilowicz is guilty of getting too much of the plate with 2 strikes so far in this one. Wake’s freshman pitcher, making his first start, has been very effective so far.

Top of the 3rd: Cards load the bases with one out. Hot strikes out on a questionably low pitch, then the ump gets a little Karma, taking a wild pitch off the pinky knuckle of his left hand. Cards plate a run on the wild pitch. Home plate umpire Ryan Clark is knocked out of the game. Seriously looked VERY painful - you could see the ump’s knuckle turning black and blue as the Wake Forest trainer worked on him.

Danilowicz just cannot pitch a clean inning - Wake scores a run in the bottom of the third to push their lead back to 4 runs at 5-1.

In another crazy play, the replacement home plate umpire takes a pitch off the side of his head, and now he is going to be replaced as well. We are officially down to just 2 umpires in this game!

Cards again load the bases in the top of the 4th, and this time Zion Rose comes through with a two-out, 2 RBI single to make it 5-3. Tague Davis follows that with a 3-run homer to give us the lead 6-5.

TJ Schlageter comes on in relief of Danilowicz and continues his season long slump - does not retire a batter while giving up a double, single, walk, RBI single and another RBI single. Jack Brown relieved him, got a double play before giving up an RBI single. Wake leads again 8-6.

Cards scratch up a run in the 5th on a great Zion Rose double, lucky steal of third base (3rd baseman dropped the ball on the tag). Rose scored with two outs on an error by the WF third baseman. Wake still leads 8-7.

Good scrappy pitching by Brown, Starke and Stahl these last three innings have kept the Cards within one run. Still 8-7 Wake Forest in the top of the 8th. Wake has 14 hits to Louisville’s 7.

Nice rally by the Cards to tie it in the 9th. Slanker with a double and light hitting George Baker with a single. Wake struggling with some sloppy throws helped get the tying run home. Had a runner on second with just one out to take the lead, but couldn’t get him home.

Wake had a runner on 2nd with no out, but England was able to shut the door. We go to the 10th tied at 8.

9-8 Deacons is the final. Cards needed one more clutch hit in the top of the 9th and just couldn’t get it. Did get some decent pitching tonight, holding a great WF offense scoreless for 5 straight innings.

Game 2: had the thought that this one started at 7pm just like last night. Wrong! We started at 6 tonight.

Another great battle: 4-4 heading to the 6th. The Wake Forest starter went out in the 5th. Eberle is still going. 2 run homer by Nugent, solo shot by Davis, and an RBI double by Kade Elam accounts for the Card’s scoring.

Some bad baserunning has hurt us - Zach Davis got picked off first in the 4th and Griffin Crain also got picked off just now in the 6th.

Still 4-4 going to the 8th. Eberle replaced by freshman Brandon Shannon for the 7th. He gave up a single and a stolen base, but no damage. Need some hits!

Tague Davis blasts his second homer of the game to deep center field to give the Cards a 5-4 lead entering the bottom of the 8th. Can we close it out?

And the answer is … NOPE! Cards had runners on first and third nobody out in the top of the ninth and yet another baserunning mistake ends up with the runner on third getting tagged out in a rundown and then the runner on first getting tagged out trying to advance to third.

We end up with no insurance runs, and then give up two runs in the bottom of the 9th to lose both the game 6-5 and the series. Game 3 tomorrow at 1pm. Do we have anything left to avoid the sweep?

Wake gets the sweep, 7-4. Cards got the tying run up to the plate in the 9th, but couldn’t do anything with it.
