Pope wouldn’t have allowed or wanted any Cal player to help, that feeble attempt by him to compare his last two years to Cal’s last 4, was disgraceful. It shows Pope has no respect for Cal. That’s why Jai Lucas just might kill it here. Connect the recent past with success going forward. No new player cares about someone who played or tells war stories about a time before they were born.

Why in the hell couldn't Pope hired him here in some capacity. This is so pathetic.
Does he have a degree ?? That may be a prerequisite. Just a thought ...
(I always wondered if Tyler Ulis has a degree, but assumed he does, as he has coached at KY and Arkansas.)

He lives in DC. I don't think he would move to Lexington just to have a symbolic role in the basketball program. We might be able to put Howard on the schedule now and have John Wall there at halfcourt.

Why not let him get his feet wet at Howard and if he’s good at the job, let’s bring him to UK?

UK isn’t an entry level, learn on the job type place as we’re seeing now.
I suspect that these are mostly just program “ambassador“ type roles not involving much real work. I mean, seriously, do we really believe the NBA stars who’ve taken these gigs are actually putting in the hours?

And, if that’s the case, I’m not sure how much he’d have to prove first. It sure can’t hurt to have his name connected to the program.

But if it is a serious job involving major responsibilities, I completely agree with you. Hire someone proven.

I am trying to be patient with MP, but when I see things like this it is making it increasingly harder. We need a GM with a name to attract and leave it vacant. Another head scratcher.

Instead we get Keegan Brown - Director of Roster Management... Like what kind of BS is that being a school like UK. I agree with you we need an actual GM with a name next to the title...

I think this is a smart move by JW, close to DC, and the Wizards . He will get his feet wet, learn, proof himself and then demand a bigger job like UK or NBA.

i Am surprised he didn’t go into coaching.

If it's a ceremonial title where he just hangs around to be a cool guy to try to help draw kids in--cool.

President of Basketball Operations seems so close to GM that...I would assume it's an actual GM type role.

And with all due respect to John, I don't think he's done enough (really anything) to show he's ready for that role at UK. I don't want Damian Lillard or Steph Curry to come be our GM either. If Wall wasn't from UK, no one would entertain it.

Yeah, I wouldn't like to see John Wall get the Mark Pope treatment.

A source tells me Pope considered contacting Wall about a possible position, but he saw Wall was once a 5* recruit, and Pope decided to turn himself down for Wall, to save Wall the chance to do it himself 😂

Mark Pope is simply a failure and insecure man.

We have no GM.

We have a head coach and staff that can't recruit or connect to today's players.

And they let John Wall take a position with Howard University.

I've gone from liking Mark Pope. To being indifferent on Mark Pope. To despising him once I saw him for who he is. He's actually the fraud and con-man people claimed Cal to be. At least Cal is a straight shooter.

Ever think maybe he didn’t want to come. He played in dc and might like being there.
Washington is his home. He's one of the very very few instances where he was shown more love from NBA fans than in college. John wall is a legend in Washington. The streets absolutely love him. He was bigger than basketball there.
