The kid actually likes fishing. It wasn't some random lame entertainment idea.
Pope spent the past year fishing instead of recruiting evidently.
Pope to his assistant: “Look what a good job CJ did teaching me to tie this knot! I’m sure this will make him feel great about himself and my willingness to learn. Can’t wait til he signs!”
I have talked so much **** about Pope. He is trying to recruit, he really is. Our staff identifies great players. Pope is too optimistic to a fault at times. Hell, flying around the world looking for backups, visiting and doing stuff like this despite the walls closing in. It sucks that he cannot recruit well because it is such a huge part to being successful.
It's difficult for me to get excited about Pope recruiting a top player, but I appreciate him for giving us that future meme. He's a good guy, a well meaning guy, it's just.... *sigh*.

Actually, it seems like there a lot more athletes these days who voice either an appreciation or a love of fishing. I guess being out there on the water with not much going on provides them with quite a bit of solace.
Popes gotta try stuff like this because whatever he’s been doing with the past few classes doesn’t work. He’s working hard and trying, it just never goes his way. That’s the part that stinks about this whole situation but not everyone is meant to be a coach at a blue blood. Until I see something different, I’m confident in saying this coming season will be his last.

Pope is our basketball version of Joker Phillips, great guy who loves his alma mater. However not cut out to coach at an elite level and can’t recruit his way out of a wet paper bag. He’s old school and doesn’t want to deal with the hassle of NIL and arguing with players, just a nice guy that’s not cut out for today’s landscape

The kid said it means a lot that Pope and staff try to get to know him off the court and liked that they wanted to JOIN HIM when he went fishing. He's not trying to introduce a kid to fishing
Honestly, I felt really bad thinking that, but you said it, not me.
It truly seems like he is trying. He is clearly trying to connect with kids. He is clearly giving it his all in recruiting. He is thinking out-side-the-box by doing things like hiring Mo Williams. He clearly loves the University. He clearly wants everyone to succeed.
It sucks talking negatively about him.
HOWEVER, he does look SUPER corny in this picture. That is the first thing I thought when I saw this pic earlier today.

I thought dance team people were supposed to be the "cool" girls? Why not ask for their help to revamp his image?
He could ask his college age daughter before he meets a recruit: "Hey, daughter, do I look like an old Mormon square with my outfit?" (And I actually think he might do this because Pope wears cool shoes when he is on the sideline coaching.)
