Cal was held back by Mitch/boosters here. If he had Popes NIL he would have dominated the portal era at UK.
True. However be honest. It’s not like the boosters quit caring about winning under Cal.

Cal had become very antagonistic towards Mitch(can’t blame Cal), standoffish to the boosters(stupid), and disrespectful towards the fans and the university(again stupid). Cal acted as he was above all and didn‘t have to play the networking game anymore.

He could have easily outlasted Mitch but when you expect boosters to bow down and give you money without playing nice well that made everything go south.

He wasn't forced out but the writing was on the wall. They want a coach the can control, and Cal wasn't that guy.
You said he was forced out. That's simply not what happened. Now your story changes. "He wasn't forced out, but the writing was on the wall." Come on man. Sell it somewhere else. Cal moved on, took his entire recruiting class with him. We hired Pope, and the rest is history. It's going to take a reset from the school president on down to fix this mess, but it can be done.

Agree that it was time for Cal to go, but I also believe we could have done better than Pope. If you’re gonna roll the dice on a guy, why not an up and comer like Jai Lucas?

Mitch has done an awful job since Covid. Bad contracts, and bad hires. Yet, some call him the best AD in the country, lol

If old Mitch had Cal set down and do an interview with him at end of year, I think its time for Pope to do the same,.

We didn't have a choice. Cal was shopping himself around in the middle of a basketball season. He was leaving regardless. Mitch, being the incompetent crook that he is, didn't have a legit backup plan aside from a moonshot (Hurley) and then dial a friend for help (Drew). When those options didn't work, somehow we ended all the way down the list to Pope. This was one of the most unprepared, unprofessional, and objectively negligent hiring sequences that I have ever seen. There's no excusing it.
Mitch seized the opportunity to flash his incompetence yet again. He wanted the control back he lost to Cal. With Pope he flashed red meat to boosters who were eager to hear the message Pope was delivering. UK first. Players that would be here for years, winning titles is everything, etc. That message being the polar opposite of Cal’s message.

Mitch chummed the sharks, got himself a yes man, seized control, got out of a horrible contract, got himself a juicy contract, truly believed Congress would pass the NIL legislation and for a very brief time made it look like it would be ok.

Now Pope can’t deliver, is supposedly reducing access of boosters which will impact NIL and is basically in hiding. Mitch lost his juicy contract, Congress didn’t act and UK’s administration is floundering.

Losing to Iowa State by 20 in second round is super exciting. Oh and having no high school recruits really got me super excited about next year. People on here can spin it any way they want, we are ten times worse now than any time during Calipari's time here.
the two aren't inclusive, and no, we are not 10x worse. Cal went to the NIT .....twice. Stop the hyperbole.

There was absolutely no reason to hire Mark Pope. His record was a joke and he wasn't good at BYU.

But Cal was clearly washed and it was time to move on.

This. Cal was just over being here. A change of scenery helped him get some energy back and getting kp back helped him too.

The hire is the problem.

Cal has always have had no.1 recruiting classes, nothing new, he is a good recruiter for the NBA he started the one and done but his coaching is not that great, saying that Pope seems to be an awful recruiter and an average coach. I think part of Pope's problems is his assistant coaches.

I agree, but at least with Calipari you would get exciting players and future NBA All-Stars. Should have let him finish out at UK until he's 70 or so and then become your chief negotiator with NIL recruits.

He probably lands AJ if the donors stayed on board. Maybe even Stokes.
I never want to see calipari on UK s bench again. No ever.

Sometimes you have to be careful what you wish for. We got rid of Cal and replaced him with the biggest loser in college basketball. If you knew CMP was going to be coach would you have wanted Cal gone?
Yes. I just wanted the him gone and would have been happy with a few losing seasons as a result. Thankfully we haven't had those

Brother, he had four Final Fours, 2 natty appearances, and a 38-1 season at UK. Youre telling me you would rather have 14 loss seasons?!
Brother that was 10 + years ago...he was never going to be in that level again at UK. He quit trying to be a coach and believed his own BS about helping families gain generational wealth

Cal will have another top 15 team next year and a top 2 pick.

UK will have an NIT Team and no first rounders.

Yeah, I'd trade places with Arkansas going into next season. Easy decision actually, and anyone objective will agree.
Then go root for your hero calipari and the hogs

That's all we would've gotten, exciting future NBA players, the results would be the same, they would still lose because of his in game coaching & it would be as frustrating as ever. Pope should've never been hired but Cal's time was done here, the boosters were tired of his ****.

He's 1-1 against Pope. He has two Sweet 16s and Pope has one and one 2nd round. This is the difference in performance you're pining after?
Except for the SEC tournament title last season that Calipari says he doesn't care about anyway lol. Other than that, the resumes aren't that much different. Funny considering the talent Calipari has compared to Pope, I would love to see Pope coach that type of talent, I at least know the in game coaching would be better because Cal sucks at it.
