@Tri-Countycat mentioned this in another thread that Mark Pope and Steven Pearl are the only coaches in the SEC without winning a conference or conference tournament title, so I decided to look it up:

Todd Golden (Florida): 1 conference title; 1 conference tournament title.

Nate Oats (Alabama): 4 conference titles; 5 conference tournament titles

John Calipari (Arkansas): 16 conference titles; 16 conference tournament titles

Mark Byington (Vanderbilt): 1 conference title; 1 conference tournament title

Rick Barnes (Tennessee): 5 conference titles; 2 conference tournament title

Bucky McMillan (Texas A&M): 2 conference titles; 1 conference tournament title

Mike White (Georgia): 3 conference titles

Dennis Gates (Missouri): 2 conference titles; 1 conference tournament title

Sean Miller (Texas): 8 conference titles; 4 conference tournament titles

Porter Moser (Oklahoma): 3 conference titles; 2 conference tournament titles

Steven Pearl (Auburn): 0 conference titles; 0 conference tournament titles

Chris Janes (Mississippi State): 4 conference titles; 3 conference tournament title

Lamont Paris (South Carolina): 1 conference title; 1 conference tournament title

Chris Beard (Ole Miss): 2 conference titles; 1 conference tournament title

Will Wade (LSU): 4 conference titles; 2 conference tournament titles

Mark Pope (Kentucky): 0 conference titles; 0 conference tournament titles

The f*ck were we thinking??? If you want to get technical about it, Todd Golden didn’t win a conference regular season or tournament title until he came to Florida so that’s 3 out of 16 coaches.

You make a great point. We have the least qualified coach in the conference. But! This is Mitch and the President deliberate de-emphasizing the UK basketball program. They did not want Cal, and Cal's one and done stars and Cal's NBA donors building a practice building that was a temple to basketball, and Cal taking basketball to London and making it International, and truthfully, Cal's high profile on the national and political stage. They wanted a good boy who would run an okay program that would let them continue to milk the legacy for every dollar until all the crazy fans were gone.

One of the worst parts of this is the deliberate splitting of the fan base, they had seen it with Tubby and this will be the defenders of they dynasty versus the Pope is a nice guy year that will help the overall disgust with the current state of the program.

Lol Pope would be lucky to get a power conference offer. He was at BYU because he’s a Mormon.
He will be at a school similar to Utah Valley State next year unless he takes a year off. I’m not trying to be too harsh on the guy, but he is really showing he has no idea what he is doing. Won’t hire a GM, wastes his time with guys he has no chance at getting and misses out on good players while chasing others that are never coming here.

Golden has now won a NCAA and it’s a dubious honor but Pearl proved he can navigate a tournament by winning the NIT.

Pope is the worst coach in the SEC and it’s not close.

I know some people connected to BYU and they are thankful that UK took Pope off their hands.

I understand what they mean. I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Minn hiring Tubby. 👍
Thankful? I would hope so. UK not only took Pope off BYU's hands, but gave them $6 million for the privilege of doing so.

Yep, crazy that we have the worst coach in the SEC. What malpractice by Mitch and anyone else in power that enabled him.

He's a smart guy, I'm sure he would get hired SOMEWHERE at an SEC school.

...but not as a basketball coach.

Pope will win 24 games this coming year & get a 4th year with everyone coming back but Moreno & any draft choices. The new 5 in 5 rules will give everyone on the roster another year. The 2027 - 28 team will be ranked & Get to Sweet 16 which gives Pope a 7th year. No amount of RR complaining can change that.

Correct. He was a head man for awhile and literally only moved up once solely because of religion. Had he played at Kansas, he would've never gotten a look. Ironically, Mitch is the only person who wanted him here and it got Mitch fired.

Funny how this poster does nothing but troll but almost never gets anyone to bite their bait.
