The NCAA needs to be severely worried about online sports betting.
Last night watching the NBA playoffs I could not believe how many gambling ads for sports were running. They show youngsters in their 20s/30s at a bar or at someone's house party eating snacks, watching a game and then betting on their phones. Literally anyone can gamble from anywhere - so the probability that players and most importantly REFS are gambling on games is now through the roof high and there's almost no way to catch anyone in the act.

Money has been slowly ruining everything, but within the past 6-10 years it's impact/influence on every aspect of life has exploded. From sports, college kids getting paid, kids transferring, kids sitting out with "injuries" while on huge NILs, refs and players doing strange / suspicious things during games, gambling, employers/corporations, inflation, and even politics - they're all poisoned with money.

It preys on people with addictive personalities and often doesn't end well for them.
Which is a huge swath of the human population. Just look at phone addiction - particularly people driving cars. Any chance they get to pick up those damned phones to check a message or continue scrolling the 'Gram or Tok to "like" something, they're on it (this is my pet peeve and I can be found screaming "get off the damned phone" at my windshield many times per day!). My dad said he'd never have a smart phone. He always had a flip phone. Then my mom convinced him about 4 years ago to get a smart phone - he never watches TV anymore, he sits in his easy chair with that phone watching news, YT shorts, and who knows what else, for hours.

There needs to be a crackdown on gambling. It is destroying so many young men’s lives. The societal and cultural impact is significant.

Our world is so broken right now. Everything that is promoted to us is killing us - our food, chemicals, media, porn, our leaders, etc. It’s all demonic.

We’ve commodified sin and absolved the purveyors as long as they can be profitable and pay the right people their cut.

It's waaaaay to accessible with phones.

Intra game gambling means the action doesn't stop until the game is over. Sad.

If you are not often around high school aged children, you’d be shocked at how many do online sports gambling.
I do not do sports gambling at all, because it WILL be addicting. I'm like every sports fan in the world; we all believe that we can make money because we know sports. But I also know that the house always wins.

Bookies are scum and there are still many of them out there. They'll gladl ruin your life and are nothing but a drug dealer, but when they have a big payout, they bolt.
This seems like a take from the past. Does anybody still use that kind of “bookie“?

Bookies are no longer shady figures on the down low who’ll bolt to avoid a payout. Instead now they’re legal, come in the form of legit corporations, VERY much out in the open, and brazenly pushing ads in your face every time you pick up your phone or watch TV.

It used to take some effort to bet on sports. You had to go and search for ways to do it. But now you just pick up the phone as you’re being tempted 24 hours per day.

I love to bet games. I love a Fall Saturday slate of college football games where I can place wagers and watch to see what happens. Its never been a problem. Please don't take away my access because other people can't control THEMSELVES. Please don't take away access because people have no self-control. It's not my fault the guy down the street doesn't know better than to bet away his life savings on a game.

I like to have a beer every now and again while sitting on my porch. Thank goodness beer hasnt been taken away because guy down the street can't stop drinking them and acts a fool.

You're wrong and I'm not going to argue with you. I know of three bookies. TONS of people still use them to avoid the digital footprint. Gambling is often hidden. I also have heard stories of all three bookies welching on big payouts. What's the client going to do? Call the cops? Yes it's dangerous for the bookies as they could get violent with the bookie but most carry and don't care as risk is in their blood and they are lowlifes.

Agreed. I hate gambling but it’s a matter of self restraint and if you can’t deal with that the best thing you can be for other people is an example of what happens. We can’t bail out anyone would be my one caveat. Do the crime do the time.

Pretty much every male under 30 gambles on sports at least once per week.

Just go look at how much revenue it generates for the state of Kentucky every year. Its absolutely insane.
