Huge series for UofL’s NCAAT tourney chances. Clemson, despite having a good RPI ranking (37th), is in similar situation due to their 6-12 conference record. This is almost an elimination series, because It’s tough to see either of these teams making the NCAA tournament as an at large team
if they lose this series.

Senior Wyatt Danilowicz (3-2, 4.73 ERA in 53 innings) gets his 11th start tonight for the Cards. Rose in LF, Slanker in RF, Alicea at SS, Nugent is DH while Baker is at catcher (Danilowicz’ regular catcher). Cards are at absolute full strength for this critical game. GO CARDS!

Good pitching but a better piece of hitting as Clemson’s Luke Gaffney muscled a low and away pitch out over the center field wall for a 1-0 Clemson lead. Cards coming to bat against Clemson ace Aidan Knaak.

BOOM! Zion Rose walks, steals 2nd, advances to third on an errant pickoff attempt, and then Tague Davis blasts his 25th homer of the year (tying Chris Dominguez for the all-time UofL record) to give the Cards a 2-1 lead.

Clemson ties it up in the top of the 3rd with a solo homer from leadoff hitter Nate Savoie. 2-2 heading to the bottom of the 3rd.

Cards catch a heckuva break to regain the lead 3-2. With 2 outs, Alicea’s hustle allows him to stretch a single into a double. On the next play, during a heavy downpour, the Clemson second baseman fields a routine ground ball off the bat of Lucas Moore and throws the ball over the head of their first baseman. Alicea scores, and play is halted for a weather delay.

Wild few innings in a steady rain - lots of tough plays in the field. 4 Clemson errors. Slanker blasts a 3 run homer in the bottom of the 6th. Cards now ahead 10-5 in the top of the 7th.

Cards held on for a crucial game 1 win, 13-10! Two long rain delays, the second one in the seventh. Brandon Shannon, who relieved winner Wyatt Danilowicz, tried to keep pitching after the second long one, but without success. The Cards gave up 4 runs with 2 outs in that inning before Peter Michael came in to get a strikeout for the third out.

Game 2 tonight at 7pm on the ACC Network. I called Aidan Knaak the Clemson ace, but that’s not actually true … their Saturday starter, Michael Sharman, is having a great season: 5-1 record, 2.70 ERA in 56 innings. Last time out at Virginia he pitched 8 innings, giving up just 1 run in a 5-1 win over the Cavaliers. Opponents are hitting just .197 against him. Great pitching matchup with Eberle going for us … We are in for a serious battle tonight!

Rocky start for Eberle - Homer, single, homer to give Clemson a 3 run lead. But Eberle settled down and blanked the Tigers for the next 5 innings, allowing the Cards to scratch back with a run in the second, 3 in the 4th and 2 more in the 6th. Cards led 6-3 entering the seventh, but relief pitching has struggled again.

Schweitzer loaded the bases with a walk, hit batter, and another walk, and then Jack Brown replaced Schweitzer. RBI single followed by 2 RBI fielder’s choice plays allow Clemson to tie the game at 6. Brown gets a pop out to second base to end the Clemson rally.

Came back and won, let them tie us, and then had a huge 8th inning to win by 5. Love the way we’re playing this series but it’s too little too late IMO.

Great 8th inning at the plate for the Cards! Alicea and Moore walked, Zion Rose singled Alicea home to put the Cards ahead. Walk to Tague Davis, and then Bayrum Hot hit a grounder that was booted by the Clemson second baseman, scoring Moore for UofL’s 2nd run.

ZIon Rose scores the 3rd run on a Jimmy Nugent sacrifice fly. Ben Slanker walks to load the bases, and then a second error in the inning by the Clemson second baseman allows Tague Davis and Bayrum Hot to score two more runs.

Cards led 11-6 going into the 9th. Aaron England comes on in the 9th to strike out the side. Cards win game 2 11-6, and take the series.

Game 3: No Colton Hartman today, at least as a starter - too many ineffective starts in a row. Sophomore left hander Casen Murphy (0-1, 6.32 ERA in 15 innings) will get his first start.

Murphy gives up a single and two walks, but no runs. 32 pitches in the first, so I’m not expecting Casen to go deep into this one with any more innings like that. Cards go down in order (groundout by Moore, strikeouts by Rose and Davis). On to the second inning!

Scoreless 2nd pitched by Murphy - Clemson left 2 more on base. Cards first hit is a big one: Jimmy Nugent blasts a solo homer to give UofL the 1-0 lead.

Schlageter replaces Murphy for the 3rd inning. Gives up a walk, single but then gets a double play. A bloop single to right field with 2 outs gives Clemson the tying run. 1-1 in the 3rd with the Cards coming to bat.

Cards take the lead 2-1 when Rose is hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Could have been much more, though. Clemson pitching strikes out Tague Davis for the second time today, and then Bayrum Hot hits into a double play on an outstanding fielding play by the Clemson second baseman.

Top of the 4th Clemson ties it up at 2 on a double, sac bunt and a very loud sac fly. Cards retake the lead on a Jimmy Nugent ground rule double followed by a Ben Slanker homer. 4-2 Cards heading to the 5th. Colton Hartman to take over for Schlageter.

Clemson definitely looks like a team that’s unraveling before everyone’s eyes. More interested in griping about strike calls than playing the game. And then not paying attention enough to take the extra base on a passed ball.

The struggles for Hartman continue … no hits for Clemson and Hartman does record 2 strikeouts, but he also issues FOUR walks in the inning as Clemson plates their third run. 4-3 Cards heading to the bottom of the
5th.

Hartman with an effective second inning, but still a little drama with 2 outs. Walk and a single (great play by Rose to keep the ball in front of him) but no runs scored. Cards still lead 4-3 heading to the bottom of the 6th.

Cards win 7-5 in 10 innings, as Jimmy Nugent blasts a two run walk off homer! We get the much needed sweep!

England yielded the game tying runs in the top of the 9th. He’s just not very effective on consecutive appearances. Eli Hoyt pitched a scoreless inning in the 10th to get the win. Cards pitching yielded 9 hits and 14 walks, but Clemson left 17 runners on base in this one.

A very nice series win. And what a great moment for Tague. And Nugent! That's 5 straight wins. Strong competition lies ahead. Let's keep it going.
