Encouraging but literally 2/3 of the portal still haven’t committed and we’re almost done

that being said better than last couple years

On3's Team Transfer Portal Index utilizes the On3 (P)erformance score to measure a team’s production during the transfer process, compared relative against its roster and not a comparison against other schools. This proprietary algorithm determines if a school has improved its overall team talent, stayed the same, or declined in talent during the transfer window.

AWESOME!!!! Is that good news for Rutgers for once, I have full faith in our AD and President and they are just starting. It is criminal that Hobbs ignored NIL, the most important thing in college sports now. Rutgers will at least become respectable in the B10 w/ Kelli Zinn focusing on NIL and paying the athletes. Yay!

Nowhere to go but up. If we didn’t rank highly that would be major cause for concern.

So true. If he doesn’t add another player, Pike did better than I expected him do do. However, this ranking is completely meaningless right now..except for the fact that I believe he has modestly improved the talent on the team.

This ranking gives a false narrative that Rutgers roster has shown marked improvement compared to other teams.Fans need to recall how highly rated Rutgers was with Harper and Bailey and the team had a losing season.

Thank you for the explanation, Bac. I thought it looked odd. Seems like a strange metric, but maybe it's useful for somebody...

That’s basically what it’s a measure of right? Each team’s incremental roster improvement year over year. Every team’s goal is always to get better. If your starting point is low, of course there is more room for improvement.

For now, I feel reasonably certain our roster has been upgraded with 2.5 new projected starters who are better than the guys who left. We didn’t lose anyone of note.

Or fans need to remember that Rutgers lost two 5 star recruits and replaced them with a bunch of freshmen and one 4 star recruit in the transfer portal and totally wasted its money on a no name guard from NJIT and then finished with one less win than the vaunted Bailey/Harper team and two less Big Ten wins. That being said the rankings show at least on paper Rutgers improved a lot. Other teams not so much. It would be worth looking at how Big Ten teams below Rutgers are doing. The on3 ranking lets you see who is coming and who is going.

For example, the 50th ranked school is Northwestern which like Rutgers has four players transferring in and eight transferring out. Three of the players transferring in are 4 stars compared to four with Rutgers. However, of the eight players Rutgers is losing, none are listed as 3 or 4 star transfers out while Northwestern is losing three 4 stars and two three stars.

Ultimately as Harper and Bailey demonstrated how good the players seem on paper doesn’t matter, it’s how well they play as a team. For Rutgers, Harper and to a lesser extent Bailey looked like stars while the team as a whole significantly underperformed. Sh*t happens. I’m over it and someday you might be too, or not.

The metric is constructed so that teams with bad players have more room to improve. It would be very hard for Michigan to score high because the best portal class in the country only replicates what they had.

But it is also true that if RU was not high on this list that would be a disaster. So at a minimum it’s not a disaster.

Strange metric.

There is no way we spent that much on Tariq last year. It would’ve been a conflict of interest to overpay him given his relationship to Knight and lack of proven ability. This year a completely different story.

In my opinion, the players “overpaid” for were likely Zrno and Fall. We had some money left over when the pickings were slim but we didn’t have enough money to actually land proven impact players. That was our situation last year. And yea, we were trying to replace 2 superstars.

This cycle is night and day different. We kept our best players and brought in guys who, on paper, are significant upgrades over the guys who left. Not sure how many more wins this will transfer to, but let’s put it this way.

We still have 3-4 spots to fill on the roster and even if we added nobody if our 2026-27 team played its opening game against the version of our 2025-26 team on opening day last season, I’d think Vegas would easily have the 2026-27 team favored to win by by 12+ points. That’s progress.

At the very least, it's nice to see that a site thinks highly of Sydnor. I wish Pike could land one top 70ish guy, but it is what it is.

Now all that's needed is for the coaches to turn them into a team that can actually win games.

Shouldn't RU MBB have been able to get a Top 100 transfer portal player?
Not with this staff! CBB is relationship and reputation based. Pikes reputation is not good and he leveraged the relationships he has which are all low major.

Maybe it’s part this, but I also think it’s more about filling the needs on the roster. The top centers simply cost too much and that was our biggest need. Same for the top level power forwards.

It wasn’t worth paying $2M for other available pieces to duplicate what we decided to retain. Only 5 play at a time. We’re not done. Hopefully we fill out the last few spots on the roster better than we did the past few years.

Steve will always be known now as the guy that had Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey and pooped the bed.

It’s certainly a thorn on his resume. Next year is a make or break opportunity for him to coach his way back into credibility though. We still lack size so I’d like to see us add one more big body contributor to the mix. But other than this, we at least appear to have the pieces to field a team that will be able to put up a competitive fight with most of our peers barring injuries, etc.

I certainly don’t give him a pass on last year because it was his fault the roster was what it what (NIL made it worse but the Ace / Dylan season made us the most unattractive high major in the country and that’s on him). The team improved I thought though as the season went on, a couple portal kids in Tariq and Buchanan showed promise, and he retained the frosh who showed the most potential (and the center - which was arguably important since we couldn’t afford to buy a third string center). So he gets at least a solid B+ so far in managing this portal cycle. Let’s see how we close things out.

On paper, we are much better and thats all we can hope for now, but I will take #22 over nothing, things are moving in a POSITIVE direction, the AD is doing the right things, we can all agree on that. She will do the right firings if we get the same results despite more support. Overall, the sinking ship is rising with Kelli Zinn busting her *** at the pumps. But I know it will take 3 to 4 yrs, fine. I hope Pikiell is here, but after the incredible womans basketball hire and IMMEDIATE results, we will get a rock star hire.
