OHIO State football underperformed in 2025?

Looking at most NFL mock drafts, OSU players are being projected as five 1st round selections, four of those could be top 10 selections. How did that team not repeat as CFP champions? I believe the answer is with the OL which didn't hold up in the B1G championship game or in the playoffs.
Indiana, in contrast has two projected first rounders (Mendoza & Cooper) and had lower rated players but their coaching and game planning is seemingly better.
There are some interesting seasons ahead in the B1G with the rise of Indiana and some recent coaching changes. This is a really strong football league, hopefully the PSU staff can lead a rise into a consistent spot in the upper tier with increased playoff participation.

Let's see if IU can sustain their success of the last two seasons. I don't believe that they're a guaranteed annual superpower. Look at Auburn as an example; some polls named them the NC in 2004, and they did win the NC in 2010. However, they’re now a second rate or even third rate SEC program at best.

Wildly underperformed relative to what they paid their roster last year. duhO$U is the biggest spender in the league (Oregon behind them). Their performance both in the league, and nationally, relative to the amount they spend on roster salaries is subpar.

I say this by acknowledging that OSU is the gold standard, at least for now, and I would love for PSU to have had their success since the Urban Meyer era, but it’s amazing that they’ve only played in one Big 10 Championship Game since the 2021 season, which they lost. That tells you that a lot of things still have to fall your way to win a championship, even when you have the best talent of any program in the country.

Good take. No guarantee IU will be on top of the B1G annually but I think as long as Cignetti is thete they remain contenders. The guy is totally focused on coaching/evaluation. He has told their AD to not schedule him for speaking engagements or special appearances. He indicated the only exception he made for this year was to be the Indy 500 Pace Car Driver.

Here is why. The 2024 NC team was laden with seniors back for 1 more shot and they succeeded. The 2025 team was younger with many on the 3 years and the NFL plan. Indiana was older and more mature with many players in their 5th or 6th year of CFB. That and OSU had 1 weakness, the OL and it cost them. I predict that Indiana will not win another natty. Their strategy is now well known and will be duplicated by teams with deeper pockets.

Poor ROI. Very poor but the OSU President got some strange so I guess he was happy

The team in blue and white underperformed a bit too in 2025.

I think you're 100% correct. The OL simply was not championship caliber. It's no surprise that of the 4-5 first rounders in this years draft, none are from the offensive line. Did they underperfom? They probably finished about where they should have with an OL that couldn't hold up against elite pass rushers. I expect an improvement this year if for no other reason than an extra year of getting bigger and stronger and another year of exprerience. Are they championship caliber? We'll find out.....on the NIL front, my guess is that we're in the top 5 in the league but probably no more than top 10 in the country. Nobody in the B1G is spending more than Oregon and the Nike/Knight led collective. IU with Mark Cuban money spent a ton in the portal (QB's are pricey), UM with Mrs. Larry Ellison and Dave Portnoy writing big checks for Underwood and others prob ahead of us as well. USC, Nebraska and you guys not far behind if at all - Drew and those RB's didn't come back for free. Like or not, welcome to new and wild world of CFB

I’m glad you are enjoying it. Although, one could argue, based on FBI files, paying someone to play a game at OSU is not new.

I don't know if OSU underperformed. If their FG kicker was competent then they very well could have beaten IU and had the #1 seed. Then they could have played Miami or IU in the championship game. They were very close to repeating. They ended up going against a very hot Miami team who almost won it all. Their OLine was sub par for them and Sayin was a first time starter.

I would offer that if you looked at the Miami game it was just a bad matchup. Miami had Rueben Bain (22), Akheem Mesidor (25) Keionte Scott (24), Jakobe Thomas (22) as draftable prospects. Those guys are all older as well. That is a lot of experience and physical maturity. Throw in the pick six and it is easy to see how you can lose that one game.

Indiana had an older team as well. All those snaps and maturity make a difference.
