Why are they holding that open coaching slot?

Listening to KSR and they were talking Stokes and how UK still thinks they can get him. Then they said that might be why they are holding the coaching spot. They didn’t elaborate so any ideas? Would they hire his hs coach? A family member?

Ordinarily I think hiring a family member or coach to get a prospect is a questionable move. In the case of Stokes, where there are some questions about his character (so to speak), it may make sense to have someone who knows him well and can communicate with him easily around the program as a “liaison,” if you’re relying on him as a key member of the roster.

My other theory for the coaching vacancy is they have someone from the NBA lined up for that position, and the hire can’t happen until their team’s season ends. Seems plausible but also the kind of thing that would probably be rumored for a while. And I haven’t read it anyway so maybe not. 🤷‍♂️

I don’t even remember the head Coach’s name but he can flat out coach a press. I watched every single game of theirs this past season and he does a great all around job. Wouldn’t bother me a bit to have him is it meant we could get Stokes and the freshman guard they have in a few years. He’s going to be special. Probably won’t happen but they did win the championship in California. Honestly I kept wanting us to play like them during our season. Crazy fun style of basketball. Actually it looked like they had a pretty big staff. The freshman I’m talking about is JJ Crawford. Jamal Crawfords son. Maybe Jamal is interested. Two former NBA greats on Staff couldn’t hurt dealing with these kids. Just talking out loud.

I have no idea but if they do that, it becomes more clear to me Pope is not a good negotiator. He’s worked to get soft commits from multiple players over the last couple years and yet somehow failed to maintain leverage. This could be the next evidence of that.

Pitino hired Magloire's coach, Simeon Mars. Calipari hired Milt Wagner, to land Dejuan. It's not uncommon. Pitino also hired that guy to land Marquis Teague at UL. And they did it again with Milt at UL.

I would compare this situation to the Wagner one at Memphis. Cal was desperate after his 21-15 season and was having trouble recruiting until Wagner.

That's the way LSU got Pete Maravich.

Reminds me that the Simeon Mars/Jamaal Magloire addition worked out rather well.

It’s to try and get Jamal Crawford which I’m sure everyone has said 50 times by now.

Sure looked to me like his first team was pretty dialed in. That looked like a pretty cohesive team who followed coaching pretty well. We have major decency bias about his coaching.
Most of the first team was made up of seniors and 5th year players from mid-majors. They were also largely religious and Mark Pope talked about that aspect in interviews.

I don’t care what they were. If it works better for our coach, go get those guys. He can relate to someone out there, find em

Hopefully for Jamal Crawford, him and Mo coaching up the guards would be a sight to behold
At minimum, they would improve some, maximum, turn into future NBA prospects. Not a bad way to spend a few months playing College basketball. Being able to relate with them would be invaluable.

Didn't Kansas hire Danny Manning's father, a truck driver? Worked for them.

Mark Fox is the only person that Pope can relate to.
He can't relate to his right hand BOOM man he brought with him from BYU Cody Feuger who is still on staff? He needs the old decrepit crypt keeper standing over his shoulder to send recruits running for the exit?

It was obviously a joke.

Crawford and Mo Williams would eventually commit mutiny on Pope after they see how he deals with players.

Hire someone like Vogel or Donovan, and then bring Crawford in. Jamal Crawford would never respect Pope enough to defer to his coaching.

Yep.

And Duke created a position for Chris Duhon's mom. UNC created a position for Tyler Hansbrough's mom.

It's actually a smart move when it comes to landing a make-or-break recruit.

Calipari should have done it with Cade Cunningham's brother. Would have never had a 9-16 season either.

I know the $$$ would be decent, but all other things equal, would you leave your current job to go work for Mark Pope at a business that he runs, knowing there’s a 95% chance it’s going to go bankrupt, and you’ll be looking for another job in less than a year?

Im sorry, what was the question about again?😏
