Highest potential player on the roster going into next season. I'd say higher potential than Wilkins. Him developing into an NBA player is probably the only way next season has a chance of being even a winning season, assuming the roster looks more or less what it looks like now.

I think he really does have big upside. This is good news.
He’s been on the roster we’re not adding anybody. It’s a dude that was trying to decide whether to come back or not whether Stokes was gonna take his spot. I guess we got that answered not gonna get big time minutes at the wing with Stokes on the roster. I think this is pretty much a signal that’s Stokes isn’t happening if anything that’s what this guy was waiting for Stokes and Freeman but Freeman was to play the four

Glad to see the kid stay. I think he has the potential to be a really good player!

Kid was top 35 recruit in his class. Why disparage him like this?
Right! 6'9 and can shoot and athletic as hell. Most likely better than 95% of players in the portal this year, this is a big deal to retain him. I think people are sleeping on him and Kam both. Clearly we need more at the 4/5 and another Guard or wing as well but this is positive news.

Never underestimate a RS. I think this kid is very undervalued and overlooked. Sounds like he would’ve left had Freeman come here. Will surprise a lot of folks and will likely have a chip on his shoulder as well

Anyone know how much weight he might have gained during the past year?

Hawthorne is long & extremely skilled. And, he’s a great fit for Pope’s offense. My only concern with him is his frame & if he can hold up all year against SEC forwards. But, we’ve seen guys excel here who were built like pencils.

With his length, skill & ability to score at all 3 levels he could be a matchup nightmare on both ends. Definitely potential there to be a major impact player, IMO. Just gotta hope he can withstand physical play & stay healthy. Trusting Pope to put him in positions to succeed is another matter, entirely.

Because he wasn't freaking good enough to help a 14 loss team last season?
The plan all along was to redshirt to allow him to put on weight. Guy barely weighed 160 his first day on campus.

They also considered yanking the redshirt when Kam went down and Hawthorne got hurt in practice soon after.

The redshirt had nothing to do with his ability as a player.

Agreed. Not to mention taking a possible 5th year of NIL earnings away from him to possibly only lose 13 games…..maybe. Wouldn’t have been a good look.

Will be fourth best player behind, Wilkins, Kam and Stokes, but I think he has a ton of potential.
