Nevertheless, I wouldn't expect a coach who gets hired towards the end of the portal period to put together as good of a roster as one who is in place when the portal opens. I would expect a coach in that situation to prioritize guys with multiple years of eligibility remaining, with an eye towards establishing a foundation for your team in the next few seasons. Fans would be more accepting of a disappointing season in that context (I think!).Honestly, what is to stop you from recruiting players who have already committed elsewhere? The National Letter of Intent doesn't even exist anymore. And with every player having an agent, it's never been easier to back channel discussions.
