Honestly, what is to stop you from recruiting players who have already committed elsewhere? The National Letter of Intent doesn't even exist anymore. And with every player having an agent, it's never been easier to back channel discussions.
I'm sure it happens regularly. Nevertheless, I wouldn't expect a coach who gets hired towards the end of the portal period to put together as good of a roster as one who is in place when the portal opens. I would expect a coach in that situation to prioritize guys with multiple years of eligibility remaining, with an eye towards establishing a foundation for your team in the next few seasons. Fans would be more accepting of a disappointing season in that context (I think!).

Heard from a good source:

Billy said he's willing to listen to UK's pitch if Pope is fired, but he's going to wait until the NBA playoffs are over.

Florida bound
He may take a year off and take Rick Barnes job on Knoxville next year. He may wait on Kansas job next year. Whatever his decision, I doubt he coaches in college this comming season. Competition next year for a top level coach will be insane. If Golden leaves for the NBA, that will be three top jobs open for a high level coach. FL, KU, and TN all have deep pockets and great facilities. It would be great if we would announce that we will be opening a national search for a head basketball coach to begin in the 2027 - 2028 season.
If we get a head start we could lock up a great coach prior to massive competition.

Fwiw Matt Norlander already has an article out about Billy D going back to college coaching in a year and the first team he mentions is Kentucky.

It sure seems like theres at least a decent chance that Donovan returns to the coaching ranks.

LMAO, we fire Pope tomorrow, offer Billy D, he flat turns us down for the 53rd time and goes to Florida. Maybe the desperation then leads the powers to be to step down off their high horse and hire Pearl. Worth a shot

Honestly if we fired Pope to take our shot at Billy D and he turns us down.. its still a win in my book. Pope is gone and wete starting our search now instead of next April.

When Bully D passes away there will be some fans at UK that will want to dig up his corpse and hire it. He ain't coming here folks, my goodness let it go. Been listening to" Billy's coming" and watching him turn us down for 25 years.

You really are that naive aren't you, or is it delusional.
What were the terms of the offer he received?

At the time, Donovan was focused on moving on and being an NBA coach. It appears he is done with the NBA. He will either retire, or move back to the college ranks. People's goals and interests change over time.

I mean, neither of them give me warm and fuzzies from the opposing sidelines. But I agree, Golden is a freaking killer. Young and hungry. Donovan has been there, done that. I could see him sliding into the Jay Wright type role rather than continuing to coach.
I could see that . The way the NBA recycles coaches he could probably eventually get another job in the league.

I think a coach that has an opportunity to have a job in the nba would be crazy to take a college job with the chaos of NIL and the transfer portal.

Apparently not you, but a gazillion others do. It's tslked about on here constantly.
So, to answer your question… .a lot of UK fans.

I can’t leave my terrible and abusive spouse that’s ruining my life…….what would the neighbors think?!

Not sure he will now, but he 100% would've if they offered him before Pope.
He turned us down every other time we asked, why do you think he would say YES now?
I doubt anyone outside his inner circle has a single clue as to what he wants to do.

Would be awesome if he did come to UK one of these days. I doubt it happens but I’m not killing anyone’s dream of that happening lol the boosters will be targeting some big names when this job opens back up again.
