"Special K"I remember Steve Wait and a Kraftisin (sp)
I’m thinking we end up something like this:
Starters:
Coleman
Combs
Sage
Koch
McKeever
Howard is top reserve in the backcourt, but one of Coleman/Combs is always on the floor to run the point.
Thompson and Harris are your top reserves at the forward spots.
Manyawu is backup center.
Spot/situational minutes for Coon and Jirak … Coon may get more time when/if he’s ready; Jirak gets more time if someone is in foul trouble or we need size.
It would not surprise me to see Howard starting ahead of Coleman, or Manyawu starting ahead of McKeever, at least at the start of the season. (After all, most everyone penciled Hausen and Folgueiras into the starting lineup last year, and neither happened.)
Deep bench is Matteoni, J. Koch, and McCollum.
Greg Stokes was listed at 6'10" during his time at the University of Iowa. Michael Payne was listed at 6'11".I think Stokes and Payne were actually closer to 6-8 and 6-9. Stokes was a great player.
I thought Lohaus was 7ft.
I know what they were listed as, and I also know what they really were.Greg Stokes was listed at 6'10" during his time at the University of Iowa. Michael Payne was listed at 6'11".
Thinman!Didn’t we have Jim Bartels playing center one year?
I was thinking that too, but figured I may be wrong, with how skinny he was. He also wasn't a leader like Winters or a wide body like Hill was.Didn’t we have Jim Bartels playing center one year?
Close. Clarke College (which since became Clarke University) in Dubuque. A guy I know that played center for one of the Wisconsin state schools (lacrosse maybe?) used to play with and against him at workouts when they were trying to go pro. Bigs like that notoriously just take time to reach a physical maturity, but even by graduation age he said Ramos was notoriously terrible.I believe he transferred to D3 and ended up at U of Dubuque or Loras. But remember one year when I was at Iowa bball camp seeing him thinking this guy is going to be great by size alone….
I'd love to see Howard play a full year with confidence. He's such a worker, but his confidence nose dived during conference play and he started trying too hard.Hoping Howard takes a significant step this year. He’s got the athleticism and 2 years in the system. I got the feeling he didn’t trust himself this year on the court.
I think Winters was around 6'5" but dude could jump. Kinda like Eric may who was about 6'5" but he could sky (for a white guy)...lolol..I remember when we had to play Kent Hill and James Winters in the post.

I played Space Invaders with Stokes every Tuesday one semester at the Union. Definitely not 6'10".Greg Stokes was listed at 6'10" during his time at the University of Iowa. Michael Payne was listed at 6'11".

Mike "Tree" Henry"Special K"![]()
Mike is a pretty special guy. He was also "my era" and I've gotten to know him a little after meeting at several Hawkeye events.Mike "Tree" Henry
He's such a joy to listen to.Mike is a pretty special guy. He was also "my era" and I've gotten to know him a little after meeting at several Hawkeye events.
He was beside and with Kenny all the way through his health battles. Mike's as good as they come.
When I think of "athletic" Hawks, Eric May always come to mind. 6'5" 220 lbs he was solid and could jump out of the gym.I think Winters was around 6'5" but dude could jump. Kinda like Eric may who was about 6'5" but he could sky (for a white guy)...lolol..
Per the National Basketball ***'n website:I know what they were listed as, and I also know what they really were.
Has anyone taken the time to actually look at a picture, Lohaus was listed at 6’ 11”. Then compare stokes and payne to lohaus in the pictures.Per the National Basketball ***'n website:
Says Stokes was 6'10" (2.08 m). btw 2.08 m = 6 ft 9.89 in.
You are correct, Greg was under 6'10.
Greg Stokes (Iowa) career stats / profile
6'8I played Space Invaders with Stokes every Tuesday one semester at the Union. Definitely not 6'10".
It's worth noting that when he was at Iowa, Lohaus was listed at 7-0. I don't know when the official records adjusted his height to 6-11 ... probably sometime during his NBA career.Has anyone taken the time to actually look at a picture, Lohaus was listed at 6’ 11”. I honestly don't know who's arguing with whom. LOL.It's over 40 years ago. Why are we arguing over an inch or 2?
Any way we can rope Jess ‘Gramps’ Settles into this height discussion?!?!It's over 40 years ago. Why are we arguing over an inch or 2?
Just to derail the thread topic about McKeever as what usually happens in most threads. It's over 40 years ago. Why are we arguing over an inch or 2?

We're going to need to see him next to Brad Lohaus to be sure.Is he really 7'3????![]()
Obviously. I've got a Kevin Kunnert picture from 1872 as well that shows he was 7-0 ft. I'll be bringing in the FBI to compare his height to McKeever plus also Stokes and Payne. We're going to need to see him next to Brad Lohaus to be sure.
I think what's most impressive is that there exists a photo of Kunnert that was taken a century before he played at Iowa. Definitely something to hang onto.Obviously. Well we know they probably won't "self reports"......I’ll be super stoked when in 2029 the NCAA vacates all their 2026-27 wins for tampering.
